      Introduction

The DHL Shipping Calculator helps you find out what it costs to send a package before you book it. Type in where the package starts, where it goes, how much it weighs, and how big the box is. The tool then shows you the price for each DHL service on that route.

Shipping prices are not based on weight alone. DHL also looks at how much space your box takes up. This is called volumetric weight. You get charged for whichever number is bigger: the real weight or the volumetric weight. The calculator works both out for you and shows the one you will pay for.

You can compare DHL Express 9:00 AM, DHL Express 12:00 Noon, DHL Express Worldwide, DHL eCommerce Parcel, and DHL Parcel International Standard side by side. Each one shows a price, a delivery time, and what is included. Services that do not run on your route are marked so you do not waste time on them. If you want to check other carriers as well, try our UPS Shipping Calculator, FedEx Shipping Calculator, or USPS Shipping Calculator.

You can switch between kilograms and pounds, or centimeters and inches. You can pick from nine currencies. You can add a Cash on Delivery fee if the buyer pays when the package arrives. A step-by-step section shows the math, so you can see exactly how the price was built.

Use this tool to plan shipping costs, pick the right service, and check if a smaller box would save you money. Rates are estimates and do not include customs duties, taxes, or account discounts.

How to use our DHL Shipping Calculator

Enter where your package is going, how much it weighs, and how big it is. The calculator shows your billable weight, DHL zone, transit times, and estimated rates for each DHL service.

Origin Country: Type the country your package ships from and pick it from the list.

Origin ZIP / Postal Code: Add the postal code you ship from. This is optional, but it makes the zone more exact.

Destination Country: Type the country your package is going to and pick it from the list. This sets your DHL shipping zone.

Destination ZIP / Postal Code: Add the delivery postal code. This is also optional.

Shipment Type: Choose "Parcel / Goods" for items, or "Documents" for paper only. Documents are priced by weight alone, so the size fields go away.

Package Weight: Type the weight of one package. Pick kg or lb with the buttons below the box. Max is 70 kg (154.3 lb). Our Kg to Lbs Calculator can help if your scale reads in the other unit.

Number of Packages: Enter how many same-size packages you send, from 1 to 99. The rate is multiplied by this number.

Package Dimensions (L × W × H): Enter the length, width, and height of one box. These set your volumetric weight.

Dimension Unit: Choose cm or in. The numbers you typed change over for you, the same way our Inches to Cm Calculator works.

Payment Mode: Pick "Prepaid" if you pay now, or "Cash on Delivery" if the buyer pays at the door. COD adds a handling fee.

Display Currency: Pick the money you want to see your rates in, like USD, EUR, or GBP. For live conversions, use the Currency Calculator.

Order Value: This box shows up only for Cash on Delivery. Enter what the goods are worth so the COD fee can be worked out.

Then click Compare Rates to see your DHL shipping cost estimate, a step-by-step breakdown, and a rate chart. Click Reset to start over.

      DHL Shipping Costs Explained

DHL is a global courier that moves parcels and documents between more than 200 countries. What you pay is not just about how heavy your box is. DHL looks at three main things: where the box is going, how much space it takes up, and how fast you want it there.

      Shipping Zones

DHL sorts every country into a pricing zone. Nearby countries sit in cheap zones. Far-away countries sit in costly zones. A box from the United States to Germany crosses one zone. The same box to Australia crosses a farther one, so it costs more. If the sender and receiver are in the same country, the shipment is domestic and usually the cheapest option. For domestic mail in the US, compare with our Postage Calculator.

      Billable Weight: Actual vs Volumetric

DHL charges for the greater of two numbers: the real weight on the scale, or the volumetric weight (also called dimensional weight). Volumetric weight is a way to price big, light boxes fairly, because a huge box of pillows takes up as much room on a plane as a small box of books.

      The math is simple:

      • Express services: length × width × height (in cm) ÷ 5,000
      • Parcel and eCommerce services: length × width × height (in cm) ÷ 6,000

So a 40 × 30 × 20 cm box has a volumetric weight of 4.8 kg for Express. If the box really weighs 5 kg, you pay for 5 kg. If it only weighs 2 kg, you still pay for 4.8 kg. This is why packing tight in a smaller box can lower your bill. If you ship by sea or air freight, the CBM Calculator and Freight Density Calculator use the same idea with cubic meters and density.

      Weight Brackets

DHL does not price every gram on its own. It rounds your billable weight up into a bracket, such as 2 kg, 5 kg, 10 kg, 20 kg, 31.5 kg, or 70 kg. A 5.2 kg parcel is billed at the 10 kg bracket. Shaving off a little weight or size can drop you into a cheaper bracket and save real money.

      DHL Service Levels

      ServiceBest forSpeed
Express 9:00 AMUrgent, must arrive by morningFastest, highest price
Express 12:00 NoonTime-set midday deliveryVery fast
Express WorldwideMost business shipmentsEnd of day, 1–6 days
eCommerce ParcelOnline orders, low costSlower, tracked
Parcel International StandardCheap shipping in EuropeSlowest

Transit times are given in business days, so count them with the Business Days Calculator to find the real arrival date. If you are planning stock or production timing, the Lead Time Calculator and ETA Calculator pair well with this tool.

      Extra Charges to Expect

      • Fuel surcharge: a percentage added to the base rate. It changes almost every week with fuel prices, and you can model it with our Fuel Surcharge Calculator.
      • Cash on Delivery (COD): if the receiver pays at the door, DHL adds a handling fee, often about 3% of the order value with a small minimum.
      • Duties and taxes: customs may charge import duty or VAT on goods. This is set by the destination country, not DHL. Estimate it with the Customs Duty Calculator.
      • Remote area and special handling: hard-to-reach addresses or odd-shaped items cost extra.

      Documents vs Parcels

Documents are papers with no commercial value, like contracts or passports. They ship at a lower rate, are billed on real weight only, and skip most customs paperwork. Anything else counts as goods and needs a commercial invoice.

      Size Limits

A single DHL piece can weigh up to 70 kg (about 154 lb) on Express, and up to about 31.5 kg on parcel and eCommerce services. Standard limits are 120 cm long, 60 cm wide, and 60 cm high. Bigger or heavier items need freight service — check the Freight Calculator, Freight Class Calculator, or Container Loading Calculator for those loads.

      Ways to Pay Less

      • Use the smallest box that fits your item safely.
      • Fill empty space with thin padding, not thick foam.
      • Pick a slower service when the delivery date is flexible.
      • Combine small parcels into one shipment when you can.
      • Check if your weight sits just above a bracket line and trim it down.
      • Run the same box through our general Shipping Calculator to compare carriers before you book.

Rates shown here are estimates based on public list prices. Business accounts with DHL often get discounts, so your final booked price may be lower.

      Frequently asked questions

Is the price from this calculator the exact price DHL will charge me?

No. It is a close estimate based on public list prices. Your real price can change because of:

      • Account discounts if you have a DHL business account
      • Fuel surcharge changes, which happen weekly
      • Customs duties and taxes
      • Remote area or special handling fees

Use it to plan and compare, then book with DHL for a firm quote.

Why do some DHL services show as not available?

Not every DHL service runs on every route. A service is greyed out when:

      • It does not serve your destination zone
      • Your billable weight is over that service's limit
      • You picked Documents and that service does not carry documents
      • You are shipping inside one country and the service is international only

The tool tells you the exact reason next to each one.

What is the difference between the 5,000 and 6,000 divisor?

They are two different volumetric weight formulas.

      • ÷ 5,000 is used for DHL Express services. It gives a higher volumetric weight.
      • ÷ 6,000 is used for DHL eCommerce and Parcel services. It gives a lower volumetric weight.

That is why the calculator shows two billable weights. Each service uses the one that applies to it.

Do I need to enter a postal code?

No. Postal codes are optional in this tool. The country you pick sets the DHL zone and the price. Adding a postal code just makes the route look more exact. Some countries, like the UAE and Hong Kong, do not use postal codes at all.

How is the Cash on Delivery fee worked out?

The tool takes 3% of your order value or a 12 USD minimum, whichever is higher. So a 250 USD order gives a fee of 12 USD, because 3% is only 7.50. A 1,000 USD order gives 30 USD. Enter the order value in the currency you picked, and the tool converts it for you.

Does the calculator include customs duties and taxes?

No. Duties, import tax, and VAT are set by the destination country, not by DHL. They are billed separately, usually to the receiver. The estimate here covers shipping charges and the fuel surcharge only.

Can I ship more than one box at a time?

Yes. Set the Number of Packages field from 1 to 99. The tool assumes every box is the same weight and size, then multiplies the rate. If your boxes are different, run each size on its own and add the totals.

What happens if my package is over 70 kg or too big?

The calculator will show an error. A single DHL piece cannot go over 70 kg on Express, or 120 × 60 × 60 cm. Anything larger needs freight service, not parcel service. Split the load into more boxes or get a freight quote instead.

Why did my price jump when I added a little weight?

You crossed into the next weight bracket. DHL prices in steps: 2, 5, 10, 20, 31.5, and 70 kg. A 5.1 kg parcel is billed at the 10 kg rate, the same as a 9.9 kg parcel. If you are just over a line, trimming a bit of weight or size can drop you back down and save money.

Should I pick Documents or Parcel for my shipment?

Pick Documents only for paper with no resale value, like contracts, letters, or forms. It is billed on real weight, ignores box size, and costs about 20% less.

Pick Parcel / Goods for anything with value, including samples and gifts. These need a commercial invoice and may face customs charges.

How accurate are the currency conversions?

They are approximate and updated from time to time, not live. Rates are worked out in USD first, then converted. For a real booking price in your currency, check with DHL or your bank.

What does the fuel surcharge cover?

It is a percentage DHL adds on top of the base rate to cover fuel costs. This tool uses 27.5%. DHL changes the real figure most weeks based on world fuel prices, so your booked rate may use a slightly different number.

      Are transit times guaranteed?

No. They are typical business day windows, not promises. Weekends, holidays, customs checks, and bad weather can add days. Express 9:00 AM and Express 12:00 Noon are time-definite services, so they are the closest to a guarantee.

Why is my volumetric weight higher than my actual weight?

Your box is big for what is inside it. Light items in large cartons take up plane space that DHL cannot sell to anyone else, so you pay for the space. Repack into a smaller box, use thin padding instead of thick foam, and you will lower the billable weight.

Can I switch between kg and lb after typing my numbers?

Yes. Click the kg or lb button and the number changes over for you. The same works for cm and in on the size fields. You do not need to retype anything.

What does domestic mean in this tool?

Domestic means the origin country and destination country are the same, like the US to the US. Domestic rates are the lowest, and only some services run domestically. If you pick two different countries, the shipment is international and gets a zone number.

How do I find the cheapest DHL option?

Look at the rate chart at the bottom. The shortest bar is the cheapest available service. Usually that is DHL Parcel International Standard or eCommerce Parcel. They take longer, so check the transit time before you choose.

What is included in the insurance shown for each service?

Each DHL service comes with basic cover at no extra cost. Express services include up to 100 USD, eCommerce Parcel about 50 USD, and Parcel International Standard about 65 USD. For higher value goods, buy extra insurance when you book.
