Introduction

This free Vedic astrology calculator builds your birth chart (also called a Janam Kundli) from your birth date, time, and place. Vedic astrology comes from ancient India. It uses the sidereal zodiac, which follows the real stars in the sky. This is why your Vedic sign is often different from the Western zodiac sign you already know.

Enter your details and press Calculate. You get your Lagna (Ascendant), Moon sign (Rashi), Sun sign, birth star (Nakshatra) with its pada, and the Tithi, or lunar day. You also get a Rasi chart (D1) and a Navamsa chart (D9) drawn in the North Indian, South Indian, or East Indian style.

The tool goes deeper too. It lists all nine planets with their signs, degrees, houses, and dignity, and marks any that are retrograde. It shows the twelve houses and their lords, your full Vimshottari Dasha timeline with the periods running right now, well-known yogas in your chart, and your Ashtakavarga bindu scores. You can pick your ayanamsa system, such as Lahiri, Raman, KP, Fagan-Bradley, or True Chitrapaksha.

Every result is backed by a step-by-step solution, so you can see the math behind your chart, from Julian Day to the Ascendant formula. Use it to learn about your chart, check timing with dashas, or study Jyotish for yourself.

How to use our Vedic Astrology Calculator

Enter your name, birth date, birth time, and birth place. The calculator gives you your Lagna (Ascendant), Moon sign, Nakshatra, Tithi, Rasi and Navamsa charts, planet positions, houses, Vimshottari Dasha periods, yogas, and Ashtakavarga bindus.

Full Name: Type the name of the person the birth chart is for. It is printed on the chart summary.

Gender: Pick Male, Female, or Other. This is optional and only shows as a label on the chart.

Day: Choose the day of the month you were born.

Month: Choose your birth month from the list.

Year: Choose your birth year.

Hour (24 h): Pick the birth hour using the 24-hour clock. For example, 2 PM is 14.

Minute: Pick the minute you were born.

Second: Pick the second if you know it. Seconds make the Lagna more exact.

Time of birth unknown: Check this box if you do not know your birth time. The tool then uses 12:00:00 noon, and your Lagna, houses, and Dasha dates may be off.

Country: Select the country where you were born. This sets the timezone and starting coordinates.

Timezone Region: This box shows only for countries with more than one timezone. Pick the region closest to your birth city.

City / Town: Type your birth city. Known cities fill in the latitude and longitude for you. If your town is very small, use the nearest big city.

Latitude: Enter the north–south position in decimal degrees. Use a plus number for north and a minus number for south.

Longitude: Enter the east–west position in decimal degrees. Use a plus number for east and a minus number for west.

Timezone Applied: Check that the UTC offset shown is right. Tick "Override timezone" and pick a UTC Offset if you need a different one.

Daylight Saving Time (DST): Turn this on if daylight saving was in effect when you were born. It adds one hour to the offset.

Ayanamsa System: Choose the sidereal system you want. Lahiri is the most common choice in Indian astrology.

Chart Style: Pick North Indian, South Indian, or East Indian to set how your Rasi and Navamsa charts are drawn.

Calculate Chart: Click this button to build your full Vedic birth chart. Click "Reset / Clear" to go back to the sample values and start again.

What Is Vedic Astrology?

Vedic astrology, also called Jyotish, is an old system of star study from India. It maps where the Sun, Moon, and planets sat in the sky at the moment you were born. That map is your birth chart, or kundli. Astrologers read it to talk about your nature, your strengths, and the timing of life events.

Sidereal Zodiac and Ayanamsa

Western astrology uses the tropical zodiac, which starts at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which is tied to the real stars. The gap between the two grows slowly over time and is now about 24 degrees. That gap is called the ayanamsa. Because of it, your Vedic Sun sign is often one sign earlier than your Western one. Lahiri is the most used ayanamsa and is the Indian government standard.

The Main Parts of a Chart

  • Lagna (Ascendant): the sign rising in the east at your birth. It sets house 1 and shapes your body, drive, and outlook.
  • Rashi (Moon sign): the sign the Moon was in. In Vedic astrology this rules the mind and feelings, and it matters more than the Sun sign.
  • Nine grahas: Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, plus Rahu and Ketu, the two lunar nodes. Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto are not used.
  • Twelve houses (bhavas): life areas such as money, home, marriage, work, and gains. Each house has a ruling planet.
  • 27 nakshatras: small star zones of 13°20' each. The nakshatra of your Moon is your birth star, and each one splits into four padas.
  • Tithi: the lunar day, found from the gap between Moon and Sun. It is used to pick good dates.

Dignity, Retrograde, and Yogas

A planet is strong when it sits in its own sign, its moolatrikona, or its exaltation sign. It is weak when debilitated, in the sign across from exaltation. When a planet looks like it moves backward from Earth, it is retrograde (vakri). Special planet patterns are called yogas. Some, like Gaja Kesari, Budhaditya, and Raja Yoga, are seen as helpful. Others, like Kemadruma, are seen as hard. Neecha Bhanga is a weak planet that gets rescued.

Vimshottari Dasha: Timing

Dasha is the Vedic clock. The Vimshottari system splits life into 120 years of planet periods. Your birth nakshatra picks the first period and how much of it is left at birth. The big period is the Mahadasha, inside it comes the Antardasha, then the Pratyantardasha. Astrologers use these to say when a planet's promise is likely to show up.

Divisional Charts and Ashtakavarga

The main chart is the Rasi chart (D1). The Navamsa (D9) splits each sign into nine parts and is read for marriage and for the deeper strength of each planet. Ashtakavarga gives each sign points called bindus. Signs with many points are seen as lucky ground; low scores hint at weak spots. The full chart total is 337.

Chart Styles

The same chart can be drawn three ways. North Indian charts are diamonds with fixed houses, so the signs move. South Indian charts are squares with fixed signs, so the houses move. East Indian (Oriya) charts are another square layout. The planet placements are the same in all three.

Why Birth Time and Place Matter

The Ascendant changes about every two hours, and it shifts a full degree every four minutes. So exact time, city, time zone, and daylight saving all change the houses and the dasha dates. The Moon moves fast too, so a wrong time can even change your nakshatra. If you do not know your birth time, treat the Ascendant, houses, and dasha dates as rough guesses.

Frequently asked questions

Why is my Vedic Sun sign different from my Western Sun sign?

The two systems measure the zodiac from different starting points. Western astrology starts at the spring equinox. Vedic astrology starts from the fixed stars. The gap between them is about 24 degrees today.

That gap pushes most people back one sign. So a Western Leo is often a Vedic Cancer. If your birthday falls near the end of a sign in Western astrology, you may stay in the same sign in Vedic astrology.

Which ayanamsa should I pick?

Pick Lahiri if you are not sure. It is the Indian government standard and the one most Vedic astrologers use.

  • Lahiri / Chitrapaksha: the default and safest pick.
  • Raman: used by followers of B.V. Raman.
  • KP: used in Krishnamurti Paddhati work.
  • Fagan-Bradley: used by Western sidereal astrologers.
  • True Chitrapaksha: ties the zodiac to the live position of the star Chitra.

The systems differ by about one degree, so planets near a sign edge can shift.

What does the Lagna or Ascendant mean?

The Lagna is the sign that was rising in the east when you were born. It becomes house 1 of your chart.

It shapes your body, your drive, and how people first see you. It also sets where every other house falls, so it is the backbone of the whole chart.

Why does the Moon sign matter more than the Sun sign here?

In Vedic astrology the Moon rules the mind, mood, and memory. Most predictions, matchmaking, and dasha timing start from the Moon.

Your Moon sign is called your Rashi. In India, people usually mean their Rashi when they say "my sign".

What is a Nakshatra and pada?

A nakshatra is a small star zone of 13°20'. There are 27 of them around the zodiac. The one holding your Moon is your birth star.

Each nakshatra splits into four padas of 3°20'. The pada narrows your reading and is used in name selection and in the Navamsa chart.

What happens if I do not know my birth time?

Tick the "Time of birth unknown" box. The tool then uses 12:00 noon.

Your Sun sign and most planets stay right. But the Lagna, the twelve houses, and the dasha start dates become rough guesses. The Moon can also move about 6 degrees in one day, so your nakshatra may shift too. Treat those parts as estimates only.

How exact does my birth time need to be?

The Ascendant moves about one degree every four minutes and a whole sign every two hours.

So a five minute error rarely changes your Lagna sign, but a one hour error often does. If you have a birth certificate time, use it. If you only remember "around 3 PM", try a few nearby times and see if the Lagna stays the same.

My birth town is not in the city list. What do I do?

Type the nearest large city, or type your town and then edit the latitude and longitude boxes yourself.

Small distance errors barely matter. Moving 50 km changes the Ascendant by only a few minutes of arc. Getting the country and time zone right matters far more.

Should I turn on the DST switch?

Turn it on only if daylight saving time was in effect on your birth date in your birth place.

Many clocks in summer show a time that is one hour ahead of the standard zone. If you were born under that rule, the switch corrects it. India, most of Asia, and most of Africa do not use DST, so leave it off there.

When should I use the timezone override?

Use it when the country default is wrong for your date. Time zone rules have changed many times in history.

Examples include wartime clock changes in Europe, older half-hour zones, and countries that split into new zones. If you know the exact UTC offset used on your birth day, tick Override timezone and pick it.

What is the Vimshottari Dasha?

It is the Vedic timing clock. It divides 120 years among the nine planets.

Your birth nakshatra picks which planet period runs first and how much of it is left at birth. The big period is the Mahadasha. Inside it sits the Antardasha, and inside that the Pratyantardasha. The calculator shows all three for today's date.

Does a bad dasha mean bad things will happen?

No. A dasha simply says which planet is loudest right now.

What it brings depends on where that planet sits in your chart, its dignity, and the houses it rules. A strong planet in a good house usually gives good results even if people call it a "hard" planet.

What does Ashtakavarga tell me?

Ashtakavarga gives each sign a score in points called bindus. Seven planets plus the Lagna each vote.

High scores mark signs where things flow easily. Low scores mark weak ground. The Sarva row adds all seven together. The whole chart totals 337 points, and the average sign gets about 28.

What counts as a low or high bindu score?

For one planet's row, 0 to 1 bindus is low and 5 or more is strong. Cells in between are neutral.

For the Sarva total, under 25 is weak and 31 or more is strong. Signs with high Sarva scores are good for transits and for starting new work.

Why are Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto missing?

Classical Vedic astrology uses only nine grahas: the Sun, Moon, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn, Rahu, and Ketu.

The outer planets were found long after the system was written and were never given signs to rule. This calculator sticks to the classical nine.

What are Rahu and Ketu?

They are the two lunar nodes, the points where the Moon's path crosses the Sun's path. They are shadow points, not solid bodies.

Rahu and Ketu always sit exactly opposite each other and always move backward, so they are always marked retrograde. Rahu is linked to desire and worldly hunger. Ketu is linked to letting go and inner work.

What does the Dignity column mean?

It shows how comfortable a planet is in its sign.

  • Exalted: the best sign for that planet.
  • Moolatrikona: a strong degree range in a favoured sign.
  • Own Sign: the planet rules the sign it sits in.
  • Friend's Sign: a helpful host.
  • Neutral Sign: no strong effect.
  • Enemy's Sign: an uneasy host.
  • Debilitated: the weakest sign, opposite exaltation.

Is a retrograde planet bad in my chart?

No. Retrograde (vakri) means the planet appeared to move backward from Earth at your birth.

Many Vedic texts say a retrograde planet is actually stronger, because it is close to Earth and bright. Its results often come in an inward or delayed way rather than a bad way.

Which chart style should I choose?

Pick the one you can read. All three show the exact same planet positions.

  • North Indian: diamond shape, houses stay fixed, signs move.
  • South Indian: square, signs stay fixed, houses move. Common in the south.
  • East Indian: another square layout used in Odisha and Bengal.

What does the Tithi mean?

Tithi is the lunar day. It is found from the angle between the Moon and the Sun, in steps of 12 degrees.

There are 30 tithis in a lunar month: 15 in the bright half (Shukla) and 15 in the dark half (Krishna). Tithis are used to pick good dates for weddings, travel, and festivals.

My chart shows no yogas. Is that a problem?

No. This tool checks a set list of well-known yogas, such as the Pancha Mahapurusha group, Gaja Kesari, Budhaditya, Raja, Dhana, Kemadruma, and Neecha Bhanga.

Classical texts describe hundreds more. An empty list just means none from this set formed. Your chart is still complete and readable.

Can I use this chart to check marriage matching?

Not directly. This tool builds one chart at a time and does not score Guna Milan or Mangal Dosha.

But it gives you the parts matching needs: your Moon sign, your nakshatra, your pada, and your Navamsa chart. You can note those for both people and take them to a matching tool or an astrologer.

Why does the current dasha update on its own?

The tool compares your birth date with today's date to find which periods are running now.

So the Mahadasha, Antardasha, and Pratyantardasha cards change over time. Open the page again next month and the smallest period will likely have moved on.
