This Bullet Energy Calculator shows how much punch a bullet has when it leaves the barrel. Type in the bullet weight and the speed, and the tool gives you the muzzle energy in foot-pounds (ft·lbs) and joules (J).

You can enter weight in grains or grams, and speed in feet per second or meters per second. The calculator switches the numbers for you. If you don't know your load, pick one of the preset calibers like 9mm, .308 Winchester, or 5.56 NATO.

The tool uses the standard ballistics formula: energy equals bullet weight times velocity squared, divided by 450,437. Each step is shown so you can see how the answer was found. What Is Bullet Energy?

Bullet energy, also called muzzle energy, is the amount of kinetic energy a bullet carries as it leaves the gun barrel. It tells you how much work that bullet can do when it hits something. Two numbers set the energy: how heavy the bullet is and how fast it moves. A related figure is momentum, which uses weight times speed without squaring, and impulse, which links that momentum to the force felt on impact.

The Muzzle Energy Formula

Shooters in the United States use this simple version of the kinetic energy formula:

Energy (ft·lbs) = (bullet weight in grains × velocity in fps²) ÷ 450,437

The number 450,437 is a shortcut. It packs the ½ from the physics formula, the change from grains to pounds (7,000 grains = 1 pound), and gravity (32.174 ft/s²) into one value. Why Speed Matters More Than Weight

Weight is only multiplied once, but velocity is squared. That means speed has a much bigger effect. Double the bullet weight and you double the energy. Double the speed and you get four times the energy. This is why a light, fast rifle round like 5.56 NATO carries far more energy than a heavy, slow pistol round like .45 ACP. Units You Will See

  • Grains (gr) – the standard weight unit for bullets. 7,000 grains = 1 pound. 1 gram = 15.4324 grains.
  • Feet per second (fps) – the standard speed unit in the U.S. 1 meter per second = 3.28084 fps. To see that speed in miles per hour, use the MPH Calculator.
  • Foot-pounds (ft·lbs) – the standard energy unit in the U.S.
  • Joules (J) – the metric energy unit used in most other countries. Joules per second is a watt, which the Power Calculator works with.

  • Under 100 ft·lbs – small rimfire rounds like .22 LR and .25 ACP.
  • 100–300 ft·lbs – small pocket pistol calibers like .32 ACP and .380 ACP.
  • 300–700 ft·lbs – common handgun rounds like 9mm, .40 S&W, and .45 ACP.
  • 700–1,500 ft·lbs – magnum handguns and light rifle rounds like 5.56 NATO.

Things to Keep in Mind

Muzzle energy is measured right at the barrel. As soon as the bullet flies, air drag slows it down, so energy drops with distance. A round with 2,700 ft·lbs at the muzzle may only have half that at 300 yards. Bullet shape and ballistic coefficient decide how fast that loss happens. Frequently asked questions

Where do I find my bullet weight and velocity?

Both numbers are printed on the ammo box or the maker's website. Bullet weight is listed in grains, like 124 gr. Velocity is listed in feet per second, like 1,150 fps.

Factory velocity comes from a test barrel. Your barrel may be shorter or longer, so your real speed can differ. A chronograph gives you the true number for your gun.

Why does my answer differ from the number on the ammo box?

Ammo makers test with their own barrel length, and they often round the printed energy. Small changes in velocity move the energy a lot because speed is squared.

If you plug in the exact grain and fps from the box, you should land within a few foot-pounds of their listed energy.

Does barrel length change muzzle energy?

Yes. A longer barrel usually gives the powder more time to push the bullet, so speed and energy go up. A short barrel gives less speed and less energy.

The calculator does not know your barrel length. Enter the velocity you measured or the one that matches your barrel.

Can I use this for airguns, arrows, or paintballs?

Yes. The math works for any object with a weight and a speed. Enter the pellet or arrow weight in grains and the speed in fps.

Airgun pellets are light, so switch to grams if that is easier. Arrow energy is often called KE and uses the same formula.

What is a good muzzle energy for deer hunting?

Many states and guides suggest at least 1,000 ft·lbs at the target for deer. Elk and larger game usually call for 1,500 ft·lbs or more.

Remember this tool shows energy at the muzzle only. Energy drops with distance, so plan for a lower number at your shooting range.

Why does the tool use 450,437 instead of the normal KE formula?

It is the same formula, just packed into one number. The 450,437 folds in the ½, the switch from grains to pounds, and gravity at 32.174 ft/s².

This lets you use grains and fps straight from the ammo box with no extra conversion steps.

Why did my result vanish after I typed something?

The result clears if a field is blank, is not a number, or is zero or less. The bad field turns red and shows an error message.

Fix the field and the answer comes back on its own. You do not have to press Calculate again.

Do I have to press Calculate every time?

No. The tool updates as you type in the weight or velocity boxes. Pressing Calculate or hitting Enter just runs it again.

What happens to my number when I switch units?

The value converts for you. If you type 124 grains and click Grams, it becomes about 8.0346 g. The energy stays the same.

It does not just relabel the box, so you never need to do the math yourself.

Does changing the decimal places change the math?

No. The 0, 1, and 2 buttons only change what you see on screen. The tool keeps the full unrounded value inside.

The comparison table always shows whole numbers to keep it easy to read.

How do I add my own load to the comparison list?

Calculate a valid result first. Then type a label like 9mm 124gr, pick ft·lbf or joules, and click Add to List.

Your row shows up with a green Yours tag, and the chart bar is green so it stands out from the built-in calibers.

Why can't I add my result to the list?

Two things block it. The label box must not be empty, and you must have a valid energy result on screen.

Fill in a name and make sure the weight and velocity fields are correct, then click Add to List again.

Are the preloaded calibers in the list exact?

They are typical values for common factory loads, meant for quick side-by-side comparison. Real energy changes with bullet weight, powder, and barrel length.

For exact numbers, run your own load and add it to the list.

Can I remove just one row from the list?

Yes. Click the X button in the Remove column for that row. The table and chart update right away.

Clear All Items wipes the whole list, and it asks you to confirm first.

Is my comparison list saved when I leave the page?

No. The list resets to the default calibers when you reload or close the page. Write down or screenshot any results you want to keep.

Why does the chart show one unit when I picked another for my entry?

The Display Unit buttons under the chart control every bar at once. The unit you pick when adding an item is just stored with that row and shown in the table.

My chart is empty. What went wrong?

The chart hides when the list has zero items. Add a cartridge or reload the page to bring back the default set.

If the bars look cramped, raise the Chart Height or lower the Bar Width, then click Show / Refresh Graph.

Does more muzzle energy mean more recoil?

Usually yes, but not always. Recoil comes from bullet weight, powder weight, and speed pushing back against the gun's weight.

A heavy gun soaks up more kick, so two loads with the same energy can feel very different.

What is the difference between muzzle energy and stopping power?

Muzzle energy is a measured number you can calculate. Stopping power is not a fixed unit and depends on bullet design, how deep it goes, and shot placement.

Use energy to compare cartridges fairly, not to predict what happens on a target.

How much energy does a bullet lose downrange?

It depends on the bullet's shape and speed. A common rifle round can lose about half its energy by 300 yards. Slow, blunt bullets lose it faster.

This tool gives muzzle energy only. Use a ballistic calculator for energy at a set distance.

How do I convert foot-pounds to joules by hand?

Multiply the foot-pounds by 1.35582. So 362 ft·lbs × 1.35582 = about 491 J. To go the other way, divide joules by 1.35582.

The calculator shows both numbers at once, so you do not have to.

What do the power classification labels mean?

They sort your result into a band so you can see where it lands. Minimal is under 100 ft·lbs, Low is 100–300, Moderate is 300–700, High is 700–1,500, Very High is 1,500–3,000, and Magnum-Class is over 3,000.

Can I enter velocity in miles per hour?

No. The tool only takes feet per second or meters per second. Convert mph first by dividing by 0.681818 to get fps.

Does bullet shape or caliber size affect this number?

No. Muzzle energy only uses weight and speed. A wide, blunt bullet and a slim, pointed bullet with the same weight and speed have the exact same energy.
