Introduction
The PFT Calculator helps U.S. Marines and those preparing for service figure out their Physical Fitness Test score in seconds. The USMC PFT has three events: an upper body test (pull-ups or push-ups), a core test (plank or crunches), and a 3-mile run. Each event is worth up to 100 points, giving a max total score of 300. You need at least 150 points overall and at least 40 points per event to pass.
Just pick your gender, age group, and altitude, then enter your numbers for each event. The calculator scores each event right away as you type and shows your total PFT score, fitness class (1st, 2nd, or 3rd), and whether you pass or fail. It also shows a chart that breaks down your points so you can see where you are strong and where you need to improve. Use this tool to set goals, track progress, and get ready for test day.
How to Use Our PFT Calculator
Enter your personal details and fitness test scores below. The calculator will give you your point score for each event, your total PFT score out of 300, and your fitness class ranking.
Gender: Pick whether you are male or female. This changes the scoring tables used for each event.
Age Group: Choose the age range that matches your current age. Older age groups have adjusted scoring standards. You can use our Age Calculator if you need to confirm which age group you fall into.
Altitude: Select whether you are testing below or above 4,500 feet. High altitude gives you extra time on the 3-mile run.
Upper Body Event: Pick either pull-ups or push-ups. Then type in the number of reps you completed. Keep in mind that push-ups are capped at 70 points while pull-ups can earn up to 100 points. If you are training with specific rep targets, our 1RM Calculator can help you plan your strength training loads.
Core Event: Pick either plank or crunches. For the plank, enter your hold time in minutes and seconds. For crunches, enter the total number you completed in 2 minutes.
3-Mile Run Time: Enter your run time in minutes and seconds. A faster time gives you a higher score. If you want to plan your pacing strategy, try our Running Pace Calculator to dial in your target splits.
Calculate: Press the Calculate button to see your results. You will get a score for each event, your total score, your class ranking (1st, 2nd, or 3rd Class), and whether you passed or failed.
What Is the USMC Physical Fitness Test (PFT)?
The USMC PFT is a fitness test that every United States Marine must pass. It measures how strong and fit a Marine is by testing three areas: upper body strength, core strength, and cardio endurance. Marines take this test twice a year to make sure they meet the physical standards set by the Marine Corps.
How the PFT Works
The test has three events. Each event is scored on a point scale, and the points from all three events are added together for a total score out of 300.
- Upper Body: Marines can choose pull-ups or push-ups. Pull-ups can earn up to 100 points, but push-ups are capped at 70 points. Pull-ups have no time limit. Push-ups must be done within 2 minutes.
- Core: The plank hold is the current core event. Marines hold a plank position for as long as they can, up to 3 minutes and 45 seconds for a perfect score of 100 points. Crunches used to be an option but were removed in January 2023.
- Cardio: Marines run 3 miles as fast as they can. A faster time gives a higher score, up to 100 points. Training with a Pace Calculator can help you hit your target time on test day.
Scoring and Classes
To pass the PFT, a Marine must score at least 40 points on each event and have a total score of at least 150. Scores are grouped into three classes:
- 1st Class: 235 to 300 points
- 2nd Class: 200 to 234 points
- 3rd Class: 150 to 199 points
Scoring a 1st Class PFT is a sign of excellent fitness and can help with promotions and career advancement. If you are also preparing for the Army Combat Fitness Test, check out our ACFT Calculator, or use the Air Force PT Calculator for Air Force fitness standards.
Age and Gender Adjustments
The PFT scoring tables change based on age and gender. Older Marines and female Marines have adjusted standards so the test is fair for everyone. There are eight age groups, starting at 17–20 and going up to 51 and older. Marines who test at high altitude (above 4,500 feet) also get extra time on the 3-mile run because the thinner air makes running harder.
Beyond the PFT, maintaining overall fitness involves tracking several health metrics. You can monitor your body composition with our Body Fat Calculator or BMI Calculator, estimate your aerobic capacity with a VO2 Max Calculator, and make sure you are eating right using our Calorie Calculator or Macro Calculator. Marines who cross-train with swimming events can also use our Swimming Pace Calculator to plan pool workouts. For strength training guidance, the RPE Calculator and FFMI Calculator are useful tools to gauge training intensity and track your muscular development over time. If you are training for distance events like a marathon or half marathon, try our Marathon Pace Calculator or Half Marathon Pace Calculator to build your endurance base. You can also use the Heart Rate Zone Calculator to make sure your cardio sessions are at the right intensity, and the Calories Burned Calculator to estimate energy expenditure during your training runs.
