Introduction

The Business Days Calculator helps you count the number of working days between two dates. Business days are Monday through Friday, not counting weekends. This is useful when you need to figure out deadlines, shipping times, or project schedules. Just pick a start date and an end date, and the calculator will do the math for you. It skips Saturdays and Sundays so you get an accurate count of only the days that matter for work and business.

How to Use Our Business Days Calculator

Enter a start date and an end date to find out how many business days (weekdays) fall between them. You can also add or subtract business days from a date.

Start Date: Pick the date you want to start counting from. This is your first day in the range.

End Date: Pick the date you want to stop counting at. The calculator will count all business days between your start and end dates.

Results: The calculator will show you the total number of business days, which are Monday through Friday. It does not count Saturdays or Sundays. This is helpful for figuring out work schedules, project timelines, shipping estimates, and deadline planning.

What Are Business Days?

Business days are the days of the week when most companies and government offices are open. In most countries, business days are Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday are not business days because they are part of the weekend.

Why Count Business Days?

Many real-life deadlines are based on business days, not regular calendar days. For example, if a bank says your transfer will take "3 business days," they do not count weekends. Shipping companies, courts, schools, and government agencies also use business days when setting deadlines. Knowing how to count business days helps you plan ahead and avoid missing important dates. If you need to find the total number of calendar days between two dates instead, our Date Duration Calculator can help with that.

How Business Days Are Counted

When you count business days, you skip over Saturdays and Sundays. You also usually skip public holidays, since most offices are closed on those days. For example, if you start counting on a Wednesday and need to add 5 business days, you would count Thursday, Friday, then skip the weekend, and continue with Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday of the next week.

What About Holidays?

Public holidays like New Year's Day, Independence Day, and Thanksgiving are typically not considered business days. However, the exact holidays that count can vary depending on your country, state, or even your specific company. When calculating business days for official or legal purposes, always check which holidays apply to your situation.

Common Uses for a Business Days Calculator

  • Shipping and delivery estimates – Find out when a package will actually arrive.
  • Legal deadlines – Courts often set deadlines in business days.
  • Project planning – Schedule work tasks and milestones accurately. Our Lead Time Calculator can also help you estimate production and delivery timelines.
  • Banking transactions – Know when payments and transfers will process.
  • Government filings – Tax forms and permits often have business day deadlines.
  • Age and date calculations – If you need to calculate someone's exact age or the time between life events, try our Age Calculator.

Using a business days calculator saves you time and removes the guesswork. Instead of counting days on a calendar by hand, you can quickly find the exact date you need.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does the calculator include the start date in the count?

By default, the start date is not included in the count. If you want to include it, turn on the Include Start Date toggle. This adds one more business day to your total.

Can I include Saturdays or Sundays as working days?

Yes. In the Weekend Settings section, you can toggle on Include Saturdays as Working Days or Include Sundays as Working Days. This is helpful if your workplace operates on weekends.

Which countries' public holidays are supported?

The calculator supports public holidays for 10 countries: United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Germany, France, India, Japan, Brazil, and Mexico. You can also select "None" if you don't want any public holidays excluded.

Can I add my own custom holidays?

Yes. In the Holiday Settings section, enter a date and an optional name, then click the + button. Your custom holiday will appear as a chip below. Click the × on any chip to remove it.

What is the difference between Count and Add/Subtract modes?

Count Business Days tells you how many business days fall between two dates. Add/Subtract Business Days takes a start date and a number of business days, then finds the target date that many business days forward or backward.

How does the Add/Subtract mode work?

Pick a start date and enter a number of business days. Choose Add → to move forward or ← Subtract to move backward. The calculator skips weekends and holidays and shows you the final date.

What happens if a holiday falls on a weekend?

For most countries like the United States, the calculator uses the observed date. If a holiday falls on Saturday, it is observed on Friday. If it falls on Sunday, it is observed on Monday. This matches how most businesses handle it.

What does the visual breakdown show?

The visual breakdown has a color-coded bar and a donut chart. Blue represents business days, orange represents weekend days, and red represents holidays. This gives you a quick picture of how the days are split.

Can I see every single day in the date range?

Yes. Click the Day-by-Day Breakdown section to expand a table. It lists each date, the day of the week, whether it is a business day, weekend, or holiday, and any notes like the holiday name.

Is there a limit to how many days I can calculate?

The day-by-day table shows up to 1,000 days. The calculation itself works for any date range, but very large ranges may take a moment to process. The timeline bar displays up to 365 days.

How do I reset the calculator to its default settings?

Click the Reset button. This sets the start date to today, the end date to two weeks from today, clears all custom holidays, resets weekend and holiday settings to defaults, and recalculates automatically.

Can I see which public holidays are being excluded?

Yes. Click View Public Holidays Being Excluded in the Holiday Settings section. It will expand to show every public holiday that falls within your date range, along with the holiday name.

What if my end date is before my start date?

The calculator handles this automatically. It will swap the dates so the earlier date comes first and still give you the correct business day count.

How many business days are in a typical year?

A typical year has about 260 weekdays (52 weeks × 5 days). After removing public holidays, the United States usually has around 249 to 251 business days per year, depending on how holidays fall.

Can I use this to calculate a deadline set in business days?

Yes. Switch to Add/Subtract Business Days mode, enter today's date as the start, type the number of business days, and the calculator will show you the exact deadline date while skipping weekends and holidays.
