Introduction

The Playlist Length Calculator tells you how long a YouTube playlist takes to watch. Paste up to five playlist or video links, press Calculate, and you get the total time in hours, minutes, and seconds.

You can also pick just part of a playlist. Use Specific Range to add up videos 5 to 20. Use Remaining to see how much time is left after the videos you already watched.

The tool shows your watch time at faster speeds like 1.25×, 1.5×, and 2×, plus any custom speed you type. A daily planner tells you how many days you need if you watch 30 minutes, 1 hour, or your own set time each day, and it gives you a finish date.

You also get the average video length, charts, a full video list, and an Excel download. Every step of the math is shown, so you can see exactly how the total was found.

How to use our Playlist Length Calculator

Paste your YouTube playlist or video links, pick how you want to count them, and the tool shows the total watch time, average video length, playback speed options, and how many days it will take to finish.

Playlist / Video URLs: Type or paste up to 5 YouTube playlist links, video links, or playlist IDs. Put one per line. Use the Paste button to grab a link from your clipboard, or Clear All to start over.

Calculation Mode: Pick Full Playlist to add up every video. Pick Specific Range to count only part of the list. Pick Remaining (Progress) to see how much watch time is left.

Start Video # and End Video #: These show up in Range mode. Enter the first and last video number you want to count.

Videos Watched: This shows up in Remaining mode. Enter how many videos you already finished.

Include current video in remaining: Tick this box if you are still in the middle of the last video you started, so it counts as time left.

Duration display unit: Choose how to show the time. Auto splits it into hours, minutes, and seconds, or you can pick hours, minutes, seconds, or days.

YouTube Data API Key (Advanced Options): Paste your own key here to read real playlists. The key is only used in your browser and is never saved.

Custom playback speed (Advanced Options): Enter any speed from 0.10× to 10.00×, like 1.35×. The tool shows how long the playlist takes at that speed.

Daily time budget: Tap 30 min, 1 hr, or 2 hr, or type your own number and choose minutes or hours. This tells you how many days you need to finish and your end date.

Press Calculate (or Ctrl+Enter) to see your results. Use View all videos to see each title and length, or Download as Excel to save the list.

What Is Playlist Length?

Playlist length is the total time it takes to watch every video in a list. You get it by adding up the length of each video. A playlist with 30 videos that are 12 minutes each is 360 minutes long, or 6 hours.

How Time Adding Works

Video times come in minutes and seconds, like 12:45. Minutes and seconds do not use base 10, so you cannot just add them like normal numbers. The safe way is to turn every video into seconds first, add them all up, then change the total back into hours, minutes, and seconds.

  • To seconds: (minutes × 60) + seconds. So 12:45 = 765 seconds.
  • Add: Sum all the seconds into one big number.
  • To hours: total ÷ 3600 = hours. The leftover ÷ 60 = minutes. What is left after that = seconds.

Example: 7,325 seconds ÷ 3600 = 2 hours, with 125 seconds left. 125 ÷ 60 = 2 minutes and 5 seconds. So the answer is 2 hr 2 min 5 sec.

Playback Speed Math

Watching faster does not change the video. It changes your time. Divide the total time by the speed. A 6 hour playlist at 1.5× takes 6 ÷ 1.5 = 4 hours. At 2× it takes 3 hours. Slower speeds work the same way: at 0.75×, it takes 8 hours.

Speed6 hour playlist
6 hr 0 min
1.25×4 hr 48 min
1.5×4 hr 0 min
1.75×3 hr 26 min
3 hr 0 min

Planning Your Days

If you watch a set amount each day, divide the total time by your daily time. Then round up, because a part of a day still counts as a whole day. A 6 hour playlist with a 1 hour budget takes 6 days. The same playlist at 1.5× speed takes 4 hours, so only 4 days.

Average Video Length

Divide the total time by the number of videos. This tells you if the playlist is full of short clips or long lectures. Short videos are easy to fit into small breaks. Long videos need bigger blocks of free time.

Remaining Time

If you already started a course or series, you only care about what is left. Add up the videos you have not seen yet. Subtract the watched part from the full total. That gives you the real time still ahead of you, not the whole playlist.

Why People Check Playlist Length

Students use it to plan study time for a course. Music fans use it to fill a drive, a workout, or a party. Teachers use it to see if a video series fits a class period. Knowing the total time up front helps you pick the right playlist and finish it.

Frequently asked questions

Does YouTube show the total length of a playlist?

No. A YouTube playlist page shows the number of videos, but not the total time. You have to add up each video's length yourself, or use a tool that reads the playlist and sums the durations.

How many videos can one YouTube playlist hold?

A single playlist can hold up to 5,000 videos. Most tools only read the first few hundred at a time, so very long playlists are often checked in parts.

Does watching at 2x speed really cut the time in half?

Yes, for the video part. Divide the total by 2: a 10 hour playlist becomes 5 hours. Real life adds a little more time because you pause, rewind, and wait for videos to load.

What playback speed do I need to finish a playlist in time?

Divide the total length by the hours you have.

  • 9 hour playlist, 6 hours free: 9 ÷ 6 = 1.5×
  • 12 hour playlist, 6 hours free: 12 ÷ 6 =

YouTube tops out at 2× in most players, so if your answer is over 2, you need more time, not more speed.

Is it bad to watch lectures at 1.5x or 2x speed?

Most people lose little at 1.25× or 1.5×. At 2× recall drops, especially with new or hard topics. A good trick is watching new material at 1.25× and using 2× only for review.

Does speeding up a video make voices sound high pitched?

No. YouTube plays the audio faster but keeps the pitch the same, so voices sound normal, just quicker. Only the pace changes.

Do ads count in a playlist's watch time?

No. Video lengths do not include ads. Each ad break can add 15 seconds to 2 minutes, so a 50 video playlist may take 20 to 60 extra minutes. Ad free viewing skips this added time.

How long is the average YouTube video?

Most regular uploads run about 10 to 12 minutes. Music videos are near 4 minutes, tutorials 8 to 20 minutes, and full lectures 40 to 60 minutes. Knowing the average helps you guess a playlist total before you add it up.

How many songs are in a one hour playlist?

The average song is about 3.5 minutes. So 60 ÷ 3.5 is close to 17 songs per hour. For a 2 hour party you need about 34 songs, and for a 30 minute workout about 9.

Why did my playlist get shorter than before?

Videos that were deleted or made private stay in the list but have no length. They show as unavailable, so their time drops out of the total. The video count can look the same while the total time falls.

How long does it take to finish a 40 hour course?

Divide 40 by your daily time and round up.

  • 1 hour a day: 40 days
  • 2 hours a day: 20 days
  • 2 hours a day at 1.5× speed: about 14 days

Why is my hand counted total a few minutes off?

YouTube cuts off the leftover fraction of a second when it shows a length. A video that is really 10:29.8 shows 10:29. Those lost bits add up, so a 200 video playlist can be a minute or two longer than your count.

How can I tell how many videos of a playlist I already watched?

When you are signed in, YouTube puts a red progress bar under thumbnails you have played and marks them as watched. Count those videos, then add up only the ones left to see your real time remaining.
