What Is a Time Percentage?

A time percentage shows how one length of time compares to another. It answers questions like "2 hours 30 minutes is what percent of 8 hours?" The answer here is 31.25%. You can use this idea to compare a break to a work shift, a study session to a whole day, or a song to a full album.

How Time Percentage Works

Percent means "out of 100." To compare two times, both must be in the same unit. Seconds work best, because days, hours, minutes, and seconds all convert into seconds with simple math:

  • 1 minute = 60 seconds
  • 1 hour = 3,600 seconds
  • 1 day = 86,400 seconds
  • 1 week = 604,800 seconds

Once both times are in seconds, divide the first time by the second time, then multiply by 100.

The Three Formulas

There are three parts in every problem: Time 1, Time 2, and the percentage. If you know two of them, you can find the third.

  • Find the percent: Percent = (Time 1 ÷ Time 2) × 100
  • Find Time 1: Time 1 = (Percent ÷ 100) × Time 2
  • Find Time 2: Time 2 = Time 1 × (100 ÷ Percent)

Example

You worked 2 hours and 30 minutes out of an 8 hour day. Change both to seconds: 2 hours 30 minutes = 9,000 seconds, and 8 hours = 28,800 seconds. Then 9,000 ÷ 28,800 = 0.3125, and 0.3125 × 100 = 31.25%. So you finished 31.25% of your day.

Why Percentages Over 100% Happen

If Time 1 is longer than Time 2, the answer will be more than 100%. For example, 12 hours is 150% of 8 hours. This is normal and often useful. It can show overtime, going past a deadline, or a task that took longer than planned.

Tips for Correct Answers

Keep minutes and seconds between 0 and 59, and roll extra amounts into the next unit up. For example, write 90 minutes as 1 hour 30 minutes. Time 2 cannot be zero when you solve for a percent, because you cannot divide by zero. Also, always compare the same kind of time: clock time, not calendar dates with months, since months have different lengths.

What percentage of an hour is 15 minutes?

15 minutes is 25% of an hour, because 15 ÷ 60 = 0.25, and 0.25 × 100 = 25%.

How do you turn minutes into a percent of an hour?

Divide the minutes by 60, then multiply by 100.

A day has 24 hours, so 8 ÷ 24 = 0.3333, which is 33.33% of a day.

How do you calculate the percentage of time spent on a task?

Put both times in the same unit, divide the task time by the total time, then multiply by 100.

Example: a 45-minute meeting in an 8-hour day. 8 hours = 480 minutes. 45 ÷ 480 = 0.09375, so the meeting used 9.38% of the day.

How many hours is 40% of an 8-hour day?

Multiply 8 by 0.40, which gives 3.2 hours.

To change 0.2 hours into minutes, multiply by 60: 0.2 × 60 = 12 minutes. So 40% of an 8-hour day is 3 hours 12 minutes.

How do you find the total time when you know a part and its percent?

Use: Total = part × 100 ÷ percent.

Example: 15 minutes is 25% of what? 15 × 100 ÷ 25 = 60 minutes, or 1 hour.

What is the difference between percent of time and percent change in time?

Percent of time compares a part to a whole: 2 hours out of 8 hours is 25%.

Percent change compares a new time to an old one: (new − old) ÷ old × 100. A task that grew from 2 hours to 3 hours went up 50%.

How do you convert decimal hours into hours and minutes?

Keep the whole number as hours. Multiply the decimal part by 60 to get minutes.

Example: 7.75 hours → 0.75 × 60 = 45, so it is 7 hours 45 minutes.

What does 0.8 FTE mean in hours per week?

FTE means full-time equivalent. If full time is 40 hours, 0.8 FTE is 80% of that: 40 × 0.8 = 32 hours a week.

0.5 FTE would be 20 hours, and 0.6 FTE would be 24 hours.

One day out of 365 days is 1 ÷ 365 = 0.27% of a year. In a leap year with 366 days it is 0.273%.

It depends on the month, because months are not the same length.

  • 28-day month: 7 ÷ 28 = 25%
  • 30-day month: 7 ÷ 30 = 23.33%
