Introduction

The PFT Calculator helps U.S. Marines and those preparing for service can find their Physical Fitness Test score. The USMC PFT has three events: an upper body test (pull-ups or push-ups), a core test (plank or crunches), and a 3-mile run. Each event is worth up to 100 points, giving a max total score of 300. Under Marine Corps Order 6100.13A you need at least 150 points overall, and failing the minimum in any one event fails the whole test.1 From 1 January 2026, Marines in combat arms specialties are scored on the male age-normed tables and need at least 210 points.2 Tick the combat arms box to apply that rule.

Just pick your gender, age group, and altitude, then enter your numbers for each event. The calculator scores each event right away as you type and shows your total PFT score, fitness class (1st, 2nd, or 3rd), and whether you pass or fail. It also shows a chart that breaks down your points so you can see where you are strong and where you need to improve. Use this tool to set goals, track progress, and get ready for test day.

How to Use Our PFT Calculator

Enter your personal details and fitness test scores below. The calculator will give you your point score for each event, your total PFT score out of 300, and your fitness class ranking.

Gender: Pick whether you are male or female. This changes the scoring tables used for each event.

Age Group: Choose the age range that matches your current age. Older age groups have adjusted scoring standards.

Altitude: Select whether you are testing below or above 4,500 feet. High altitude gives you extra time on the 3-mile run; the order applies adjusted run tables at 4,500 feet or more above sea level.1

Upper Body Event: Pick either pull-ups or push-ups. Then type in the number of reps you completed. The order allows maximum points on this event only for pull-ups.1 In this calculator's tables push-ups top out at 70 points while pull-ups can earn up to 100.

Core Event: Pick either plank or crunches. For the plank, enter your hold time in minutes and seconds. For crunches, enter the total number you completed in 2 minutes.

3-Mile Run Time: Enter your run time in minutes and seconds. A faster time gives you a higher score.

Calculate: Press the Calculate button to see your results. You will get a score for each event, your total score, your class ranking (1st, 2nd, or 3rd Class), and whether you passed or failed.

What Is the USMC Physical Fitness Test (PFT)?

The USMC PFT is a fitness test that every United States Marine must pass. It measures how strong and fit a Marine is by testing three areas: upper body strength, core strength, and cardio endurance. Marines take the PFT once a year, between 1 January and 30 June, with the Combat Fitness Test in the other half of the year.1

How the PFT Works

The test has three events. Each event is scored on a point scale, and the points from all three events are added together for a total score out of 300.

  • Upper Body: Marines can choose pull-ups or push-ups. Pull-ups can earn up to 100 points, but push-ups are capped at 70 points. Pull-ups have no time limit. Push-ups must be done within 2 minutes.
  • Core: The plank hold is the current core event. Marines hold a plank position for as long as they can, up to 3 minutes and 45 seconds for a perfect score of 100 points.1 The abdominal crunch was discontinued on 31 December 2022.1
  • Cardio: Marines run 3 miles as fast as they can. A faster time gives a higher score, up to 100 points.

Scoring and Classes

To pass the PFT, a Marine must meet the minimum in each event and reach a total of at least 150; the order notes that the minimum in every event does not add up to a passing total, so extra points are needed somewhere.1 Scores are grouped into three classes:

  • 1st Class: 235 to 300 points
  • 2nd Class: 200 to 234 points
  • 3rd Class: 150 to 199 points

These class thresholds are Table 2-1 of the order.1 Scoring a 1st Class PFT is a sign of excellent fitness and can help with promotions and career advancement. If you are also preparing for the Army Combat Fitness Test, check out our ACFT Calculator, or use the Air Force PT Calculator for Air Force fitness standards.

Age and Gender Adjustments

The PFT scoring tables change based on age and gender. Older Marines and female Marines have adjusted standards so the test is fair for everyone. There are eight age groups, starting at 17–20 and going up to 51 and older. Marines who test at high altitude (above 4,500 feet) also get extra time on the 3-mile run because the thinner air makes running harder. From 1 January 2026, combat arms Marines are scored on the male age-normed tables with a 210-point minimum, while other Marines keep the sex- and age-normed standards.2 The calculator's combat arms option applies the male tables and the 210 minimum.

Formulas used

Rep-Based Score (Pull-Ups, Push-Ups, Crunches)
S = \begin{cases} 0 & \text{if } r \le 0 \\ 40 \times \dfrac{r}{r_{\min}} & \text{if } 0 < r < r_{\min} \\ 40 + (S_{\max} - 40) \times \dfrac{r - r_{\min}}{r_{\max} - r_{\min}} & \text{if } r_{\min} \le r < r_{\max} \\ S_{\max} & \text{if } r \ge r_{\max} \end{cases}
Plank Score (time-based)
S = \begin{cases} 0 & \text{if } t \le 0 \\ 40 \times \dfrac{t}{70} & \text{if } 0 < t < 70 \\ 40 + 60 \times \dfrac{t - 70}{225 - 70} & \text{if } 70 \le t < 225 \\ 100 & \text{if } t \ge 225 \end{cases}
3-Mile Run Score (lower time = higher score)
S = \begin{cases} 100 & \text{if } t \le t_{\max} \\ 40 + 60 \times \dfrac{t_{\min} - t}{t_{\min} - t_{\max}} & \text{if } t_{\max} < t < t_{\min} \\ 40 \times \max\!\left(0,\; 1 - \dfrac{t - t_{\min}}{120}\right) & \text{if } t \ge t_{\min} \end{cases}
High-Altitude Run Time Adjustment
t_{\max}' = \lfloor t_{\max} \times 1.06 \rceil, \quad t_{\min}' = \lfloor t_{\min} \times 1.06 \rceil

Frequently asked questions

What is a passing score on the USMC PFT?

You need a total score of at least 150 points, and missing the minimum in any event fails the test even if your total is above 150.1

Why should I pick pull-ups instead of push-ups?

Pull-ups let you earn up to 100 points, while push-ups are capped at 70 points. If you want the highest possible PFT score, pull-ups give you 30 more potential points for the upper body event.

Are crunches still allowed on the PFT?

No. The abdominal crunch was discontinued on 31 December 2022, leaving the plank as the only core event.1 Our calculator includes crunches only as a legacy reference option.

How does altitude affect my run score?

If you test at 4,500 feet or more, the order uses adjusted run-time tables.1 This calculator approximates them by adding about 6% extra time to the scoring table so you are not penalized for testing at high altitude.

What plank time do I need for a perfect core score?

You need to hold the plank for 3 minutes and 45 seconds (3:45) to earn the full 100 points.1 The order's minimum plank time is 1 minute and 10 seconds.1 This calculator scores from that minimum.

How many pull-ups do I need for a perfect score?

It depends on your gender and age group. For example, a male Marine aged 21–25 needs 23 pull-ups for 100 points. A female Marine in the same age group needs 11. The calculator adjusts automatically when you select your demographics.

What 3-mile run time gives me 100 points?

For a male aged 21–25 at low altitude, you need 18:00 or faster. For a female in the same group, you need 21:00 or faster. Older age groups and high altitude have more generous time standards.

What do 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Class mean?

1st Class is 235–300 points and shows excellent fitness. 2nd Class is 200–234 points. 3rd Class is 150–199 points and is the minimum passing range. Scoring 1st Class can help with promotions.

How often do Marines take the PFT?

Marines take the PFT once a year, between 1 January and 30 June, and the Combat Fitness Test in the second half of the year.1 Scores are recorded and can affect promotions, assignments, and overall career progression.

What happens if I fail one event but pass the other two?

You fail the entire PFT. Every event must score at least 40 points, and your total must be 150 or higher. Failing even one event means you do not pass, no matter how high your other scores are.

Is there a time limit for pull-ups?

No. Pull-ups have no time limit. You do as many dead-hang pull-ups as you can without dropping off the bar. Push-ups, on the other hand, must be completed within 2 minutes.
