Step-by-Step Solution

Introduction

This month calculator finds the number of months and days between any two dates. Just pick a start date and an end date, and the tool does the rest. It shows your result in months, days, weeks, hours, and minutes. It also counts business days and weekend days for you.

The order of the dates does not matter. If you put the later date first, the calculator will still give the right answer. You can also click the "Today" button to use today's date without typing it in.

Along with the results, you get a step-by-step breakdown that shows how each number was found. Charts help you see how the days split across each calendar month and how many fall on weekdays versus weekends. Whether you need to plan a project, track a deadline, or just want to know how far apart two dates are, this tool gives you a clear answer in seconds.

How to Use Our Month Calculator

Enter two dates below to find the number of months and days between them. The calculator will show you the total time in months, days, weeks, hours, and more.

Start Date: Pick the first date. You can type it in or use the date picker. Click the "Today" button to use today's date.

End Date: Pick the second date. It can be before or after the start date — the order does not matter. Click the "Today" button to use today's date.

Press the Calculate button to see your results. Press Clear to reset both dates and start over.

How to Count Months Between Two Dates

A month calculator helps you find the exact time between any two dates. You pick a start date and an end date, and it tells you how many months and days sit between them. This is useful when you need to track a deadline, figure out how long a project lasted, or count down to an event.

Why Counting Months Is Tricky

Not all months have the same number of days. February has 28 or 29 days, while months like January and March have 31. This means you cannot just divide a number of days by 30 and get a perfect answer. A good month calculator walks through each calendar month one at a time so the count stays accurate.

Months vs. Days vs. Weeks

People measure time in different units depending on the situation. A doctor might track a pregnancy in weeks. A landlord counts rent by the month. A lawyer may need the exact number of business days. Each unit gives you a slightly different view of the same span of time, so it helps to see all of them at once. For a broader look at the total elapsed time, try our date duration calculator.

What Are Business Days?

Business days are weekdays — Monday through Friday. They leave out Saturday and Sunday. Many work deadlines, shipping estimates, and legal time limits use business days instead of total days. Knowing the split between weekdays and weekend days can help you plan more clearly. Our work hours calculator can also help if you need to tally the actual working hours within a date range.

When You Might Need This

People commonly count months between dates for lease agreements, loan terms, age calculations, school semesters, and travel planning. Any time you need to know how much time has passed or how much time is left, a month calculator gives you a fast and reliable answer. You can also use our date calculator to add or subtract a specific number of months from any starting date, or check the days since calculator to see how many days have elapsed from a past event.

Frequently asked questions

Does the order of the dates matter?

No. You can put either date first. The calculator swaps them automatically and gives the correct result every time.

How does the calculator handle months with different lengths?

It steps through each calendar month one at a time. It uses the actual number of days in each month, including 28 or 29 days for February in a leap year. This keeps the count accurate.

What does the decimal months value mean?

The decimal months value divides the total days by 30.4375, which is the average number of days in a month. It gives you a single number instead of separate months and days.

Are the start date and end date included in the count?

The calculator counts the days from the start date up to and including the end date. The total reflects every day in that range.

How are business days counted?

Business days include only Monday through Friday. Saturdays and Sundays are left out. Public holidays are not removed because they vary by location.

Can I use this calculator on my phone?

Yes. The calculator is fully responsive. It works on phones, tablets, and desktop computers. The date picker adjusts to your device.

What does Calendar Months Spanned mean?

It lists every calendar month that your date range touches, even if only one day falls in that month. It also shows the total count of those months.

How is the percentage of a calendar year calculated?

The calculator divides the total days by 365 and multiplies by 100. This tells you what portion of a standard year your date range covers.

Why does the weeks value have a decimal?

Most date ranges do not split into a whole number of weeks. The decimal shows the leftover days as a fraction of a week. For example, 0.5 means about 3 or 4 extra days.

Does this tool account for leap years?

Yes. The calculator uses real calendar dates, so it correctly counts 366 days in a leap year and 29 days for February when a leap year applies.

What is the difference between total months and months with remaining days?

Total months is a single decimal number like 6.41. Months with remaining days splits that into whole months and leftover days, like 6 months and 14 days. Both describe the same span of time.

Can I calculate months between dates in different years?

Yes. The calculator works across any number of years. It will show the result in years, months, and days if the span covers more than 12 months.

What does the bar chart show?

The bar chart shows how many days of your date range fall in each calendar month. Taller bars mean more days in that month.

What does the donut chart show?

The donut chart splits your total days into business days and weekend days. It shows the percentage and count for each group.

How do I reset the calculator?

Click the Clear button. This removes both dates and hides the results so you can start a new calculation.
