        UTC Offset Comparison

        Introduction

Need to know the time difference between two cities? Our Time Zone Difference Calculator makes it simple. Pick any two or three locations in the world, set a date and time, and instantly see how many hours and minutes apart they are. The tool handles Daylight Saving Time changes for you, so the results stay accurate all year long.

This calculator is useful when you need to schedule a call across time zones, plan a trip, or figure out what time it is right now in another country. You can compare up to three time zones at once, swap them with one click, and switch between 12-hour and 24-hour formats. A step-by-step breakdown shows you exactly how the math works, and a chart lets you see each zone's UTC offset side by side.

Just type a city name, country, or time zone abbreviation like EST or JST into the search box. The calculator does the rest.

How to Use Our Time Zone Difference Calculator

Enter two or three locations along with a date and time. The calculator will show you the exact time difference between each time zone, a step-by-step breakdown, and a visual chart of UTC offsets.

Time Format: Use the toggle at the top to switch between 12-hour (AM/PM) and 24-hour clock format. This changes how time is shown in every slot. If you work with 24-hour notation regularly, our military time calculator can also help with conversions.

Location or Timezone: Type a city name, country, or time zone code (like "EST" or "Asia/Tokyo") into the search box in each slot. Pick the correct match from the dropdown list. The first two slots are required. The third slot is optional if you want to compare three zones at once.

Date: Choose the date you want to compare. This matters because daylight saving time can change the offset between zones on different dates. If you need to find a specific future or past date, our date calculator can help.

Time: Enter the hour, minute, and second for your chosen slot. If you are in 12-hour mode, click the AM/PM button to toggle between morning and afternoon. When you change the time in one slot, the other slots update right away to show the same moment.

Use Current Time: Click this button inside any slot to fill all slots with the current time from your device. You can also click "Use Current Time (all slots)" in the toolbar at the top.

Swap Button: Click the round arrow button between the first two slots to switch their time zones with each other.

Calculate: Press this button to refresh the results. The calculator also updates live as you type, but you can press it any time to be sure.

Reset: Press this button to clear all your choices and return the calculator to its default settings of New York, London, and Mumbai.

What Is a Time Zone Difference?

The Earth is split into different time zones. Each zone follows its own clock. When it is noon in New York, it is already 5:00 PM in London. This happens because the Earth spins, and the sun reaches different places at different times. A time zone difference tells you how many hours and minutes apart two places are on the clock. You can also use our time zone calculator to quickly convert a specific time from one zone to another.

        Why Time Zones Exist

Before time zones, every town set its own clock by the sun. This caused confusion, especially for trains and communication. In 1884, countries agreed to divide the world into zones based on UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). UTC is the starting point at 0 hours. Each zone is a set number of hours ahead of or behind UTC. For example, New York is UTC−5 in winter and UTC−4 in summer.

        What Is UTC Offset?

A UTC offset is the number of hours and minutes a time zone adds to or subtracts from UTC. Tokyo has an offset of UTC+9, meaning it is 9 hours ahead of UTC. Some offsets are not whole hours. India is UTC+5:30, and Nepal is UTC+5:45. If you need to measure an exact span of hours and minutes between two moments, our time duration calculator is a helpful companion tool.

How Daylight Saving Time Affects the Difference

Many countries use Daylight Saving Time (DST). They move their clocks forward by one hour in spring and back by one hour in fall. This means the time difference between two cities can change depending on the date. London and New York are 5 hours apart in winter but only 4 hours apart in summer because both shift their clocks — but on different dates. Always check the difference for the specific date you need. Our date duration calculator can help you count the exact number of days between two dates if you need to pinpoint when a DST change occurs.

When You Need to Know the Time Difference

Knowing the exact time difference is useful when you need to schedule a call or meeting with someone in another country, catch a live event broadcast from a different region, plan travel across multiple time zones, or set a deadline that people in different places must follow. Getting it wrong can mean missing a flight, joining a meeting an hour late, or waking someone up in the middle of the night.

If you are coordinating across business days in different countries, keep in mind that weekends and holidays vary by region too. For travel planning, our flight time calculator can estimate how long your journey will take, while the work hours calculator helps you figure out overlapping office hours between locations. You might also want to use the add time calculator to quickly add or subtract hours and minutes when adjusting schedules across zones.

        Formulas used

UTC Offset of a Timezone (in minutes)
        \text{Offset}_{\text{min}} = \frac{\text{WallAsUTC}_{\text{ms}} - \text{Instant}_{\text{ms}}}{60000}
Local Wall Time to UTC Instant
        \text{UTC}_{\text{ms}} = \text{Wall}_{\text{ms}} - \text{Offset}_{\text{min}} \times 60000
        Time Difference Between Two Zones
        \Delta = \text{Offset}_B - \text{Offset}_A
Difference Expressed in Hours and Minutes
        h = \left\lfloor \frac{|\Delta|}{60} \right\rfloor, \quad m = |\Delta| \bmod 60
        Day Rollover Between Zones
        \Delta_{\text{days}} = \frac{\text{DateUTC}_B}{86400000} - \frac{\text{DateUTC}_A}{86400000}

        Frequently asked questions

How do I find the time difference between two cities?

Type the first city name into the Convert From slot and the second city into the And slot. Pick the correct match from each dropdown list. The calculator instantly shows the time difference in hours and minutes in the summary below.

Can I compare three time zones at the same time?

Yes. The third slot labeled Also (optional) lets you add a third location. All three slots stay in sync. When you change the time in one slot, the other two update to show the same moment.

Why does the time difference change when I pick a different date?

Many countries use Daylight Saving Time. They shift their clocks forward or back on certain dates. This can change the gap between two time zones by an hour or more. Always set the correct date to get an accurate result.

What does the warning about clocks springing forward mean?

It means the local time you entered does not exist in that time zone. During a DST spring-forward, clocks skip ahead and some times are lost. The calculator adjusts your entry to the next valid time automatically.

What does the warning about a fall-back mean?

During a DST fall-back, clocks move backward and the same local time happens twice. The calculator picks the earlier occurrence by default and shows a warning so you know.

How do I switch between 12-hour and 24-hour time?

Use the Time Format toggle at the top of the calculator. Slide it to the right for 24-hour format or to the left for 12-hour format with an AM/PM button.

What does the swap button do?

The round arrow button between the first two slots switches their time zones. The zone in Convert From moves to And, and the zone in And moves to Convert From. The time stays the same.

Can I search by time zone abbreviation like EST or IST?

Yes. You can type abbreviations like EST, PST, JST, or IST into the search box. You can also type a city name, country name, or IANA zone name like America/Chicago.

What does the +1 day or -1 day badge mean in the results?

It means the converted time falls on a different calendar date than the source slot. For example, if it is 11 PM on Monday in New York, it may already be Tuesday in Tokyo. The badge shows how many days ahead or behind.

What is the UTC offset chart at the bottom?

The bar chart shows each selected time zone's UTC offset in hours side by side. It gives you a quick visual way to see how far each zone is from UTC and from each other.

Does the calculator update automatically when I type?

Yes. The results update live as you change the date, time, or time zone in any slot. You do not need to press Calculate, but you can press it any time to force a refresh.

What happens if I only fill in one time zone?

You will see the current time for that zone, but no difference will be shown. You need at least two time zones selected to see a time difference comparison.

Does this calculator account for half-hour and quarter-hour time zones?

Yes. Zones like India (UTC+5:30), Nepal (UTC+5:45), and Chatham Islands (UTC+12:45) are fully supported. The difference is shown in both hours and minutes.

How do I reset the calculator to its default settings?

Click the Reset button. This sets the three slots back to New York, London, and Mumbai, clears all warnings, and uses the current time from your device.

Can I use this tool to find out what time it is right now in another city?

Yes. Click Use Current Time in any slot or in the toolbar. The calculator fills every slot with the current moment, so you can see the live time in each selected city.
