Introduction

A deadline calculator helps you find the exact date a task is due. You pick a start date, enter a number of days, and the tool counts forward or backward to give you the right answer. It can count calendar days or business days only. When you choose business days, it skips weekends and holidays so you get an accurate deadline. You can also pick your state to include state holidays in the count. If your deadline lands on a weekend or holiday, the calculator rolls it to the next open business day. This tool is useful for legal deadlines, work projects, school assignments, and any task with a time limit. Enter your details above and click "Calculate Deadline" to get your result in seconds.

How to Use Our Deadline Calculator

Enter a start date, the number of days to count, and how you want to count them. The calculator will give you the exact deadline date along with a full breakdown of skipped days, weekends, and holidays.

Start Date: Pick the date you want to start counting from. This is day zero and is not included in the count.

Number of Days: Type the number of days you need to count. You can enter any whole number from 1 to 999.

Count Direction: Choose "After" to count forward into the future or "Before" to count backward into the past.

Counting Method: Choose "Calendar Days" to count every day, including weekends and holidays. Choose "Business Days Only" to skip weekends and holidays while counting. If you only need to count business days without a specific deadline in mind, our Business Days Calculator is another helpful option.

Holiday Schedule: This option appears when you choose Business Days Only. Pick "Federal Holidays" or select a specific state to also skip that state's official holidays. A table below the dropdown shows which holidays apply.

What Is a Deadline Calculator?

A deadline is a date by which something must be done. People deal with deadlines all the time — for bills, court filings, school projects, contracts, and work tasks. A deadline calculator helps you figure out the exact date a deadline falls on by counting a set number of days from a start date. If you simply need to add a specific number of days to a date, you can also use our Date Add Calculator.

How Deadlines Are Counted

There are two main ways to count days toward a deadline: calendar days and business days. Calendar days include every day on the calendar — weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Business days only count Monday through Friday and skip weekends and public holidays. Many legal and government deadlines use business days, while other deadlines use calendar days. To find the total number of days between two known dates, try our Date Duration Calculator.

The direction you count also matters. You can count forward from a start date (for example, "30 days after today") or backward (for example, "10 business days before a due date"). Counting backward is useful when you need to know the latest date you can start something and still meet a fixed deadline. Our Days From Date Calculator can also help you find a date a certain number of days from any starting point, while the Days Until Calculator is handy for counting down to an upcoming event.

Why Holidays Matter

When counting business days, holidays change your final date. If a deadline lands on a weekend or a holiday, it usually rolls to the next available business day. Federal holidays apply across the entire United States, but many states also observe their own holidays. For example, Louisiana observes Mardi Gras, and Hawaii observes Kamehameha Day. Choosing the right holiday schedule makes sure your deadline is accurate.

Getting a deadline wrong — even by one day — can lead to missed filings, late fees, or broken agreements. This tool does the counting for you so you can trust the result. For broader date math needs, our Date Calculator lets you perform various date-related calculations, and the Weeks Calculator is useful when your timeline is measured in weeks rather than days. If your project involves tracking work time alongside deadlines, the Work Hours Calculator and Lead Time Calculator can also be valuable planning tools.

Formulas used

Calendar-Day Raw Deadline
D_{\text{raw}} = D_{\text{start}} + s \times N, \quad s = \begin{cases} +1 & \text{(after)} \\ -1 & \text{(before)} \end{cases}
Nth Weekday of a Month
\text{day} = 1 + (w - d_1 + 7) \bmod 7 + (n - 1) \times 7
Last Weekday of a Month
\text{day} = L - (d_L - w + 7) \bmod 7
Fixed-Holiday Observation Shift
D_{\text{obs}} = \begin{cases} D - 1 & \text{if } D \text{ falls on Saturday} \\ D + 1 & \text{if } D \text{ falls on Sunday} \\ D & \text{otherwise} \end{cases}
Day Composition (Calendar-Day Mode)
B = N - W - H
Easter Date (Anonymous Gregorian Computus)
\begin{aligned} a &= Y \bmod 19,\; b = \lfloor Y/100 \rfloor,\; c = Y \bmod 100 \\ h &= (19a + b - \lfloor b/4 \rfloor - \lfloor \frac{b - \lfloor(b+8)/25\rfloor + 1}{3} \rfloor + 15) \bmod 30 \\ l &= (32 + 2(b \bmod 4) + 2\lfloor c/4 \rfloor - h - (c \bmod 4)) \bmod 7 \\ m &= \lfloor \frac{a + 11h + 22l}{451} \rfloor \\ \text{month} &= \lfloor (h + l - 7m + 114) / 31 \rfloor \\ \text{day} &= ((h + l - 7m + 114) \bmod 31) + 1 \end{aligned}

Frequently asked questions

Is the start date included in the count?

No. The start date is day zero. The calculator begins counting from the next day. For example, if your start date is Monday and you count 1 calendar day forward, your deadline is Tuesday.

What happens if my deadline falls on a weekend or holiday?

The calculator rolls the deadline to the next available business day. If you are counting forward, it moves to the next weekday that is not a holiday. If you are counting backward, it moves to the previous available business day.

What is the difference between calendar days and business days?

Calendar days count every single day, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. Business days only count Monday through Friday and skip weekends and public holidays.

Which holidays does the calculator skip?

When set to Federal, it skips 11 U.S. federal holidays like New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. When you pick a state, it also skips that state's official holidays. A table on the calculator shows exactly which holidays apply to your selection.

Can I count backward from a date?

Yes. Click the "Before" button under Count Direction. The calculator will count backward from your start date instead of forward. This is helpful when you know a due date and need to find when to begin.

What is the maximum number of days I can enter?

You can enter any whole number from 1 to 999.

How does the calculator handle a holiday that falls on a weekend?

Federal holidays that fall on a Saturday are observed on the Friday before. Federal holidays that fall on a Sunday are observed on the Monday after. The calculator uses the observed date, not the actual calendar date.

Do I need to pick a state for the holiday schedule?

No. If you only need federal holidays, keep the setting on "Federal Holidays." Pick a state only if your deadline must also account for that state's own official holidays.

What does the rollover feature do?

If the counted date lands on a weekend or holiday, the calculator automatically moves the deadline to the nearest valid business day. This is called a rollover. It keeps moving in the same direction you chose until it finds a working day.

Can I use this calculator for legal deadlines?

Yes. Many legal deadlines are based on a set number of calendar or business days. This tool counts both types and accounts for federal and state holidays. However, always check the specific rules that apply to your case, as some courts have their own counting methods.

What does the skipped days list show?

When you count business days, the "View Skipped Days" section lists every weekend day and holiday that was not counted. It shows the date and the reason it was skipped, such as "Weekend (Saturday)" or "Christmas Day."

What does the day composition chart show?

The donut chart breaks down the total span of days into three groups: business days, weekend days, and holidays. It gives you a quick visual picture of how the days in your count are split up.

Does the calculator work for dates in the past?

Yes. You can pick any past date as your start date. The calculator will count forward or backward from that date just like it would with a future date.

Why is my result different when I switch from calendar days to business days?

Business days skip weekends and holidays, so it takes more calendar time to reach the same number of business days. For example, 10 calendar days from a Monday is a Thursday, but 10 business days from a Monday is two full weeks later.
