Introduction

The Pennsylvania Turnpike is one of the longest toll roads in the United States, stretching 360 miles across the state. Every driver who uses it must pay a toll, and the cost depends on where you get on, where you get off, and what kind of vehicle you drive. Since January 2025, the PA Turnpike is fully cashless. You pay with an E-ZPass transponder or receive a Toll By Plate bill in the mail based on a photo of your license plate. Toll By Plate costs about twice as much as E-ZPass.

This free PA Turnpike Toll Calculator helps you find out exactly how much your trip will cost before you hit the road. Enter your starting interchange and exit interchange, pick your vehicle type and axle count, and get instant toll estimates for both E-ZPass and Toll By Plate. You can also add intermediate stops, calculate round-trip costs, and see a full breakdown of charges for each leg of your trip. Whether you drive a car, motorcycle, RV, or commercial truck, this tool gives you a clear picture of your PA Turnpike toll costs so you can plan and budget with confidence. If you are looking for toll estimates on other highways beyond the PA Turnpike, try our general Toll Calculator. And if you are considering a rideshare instead of driving yourself, our Uber Cost Calculator can help you compare the cost of an Uber ride against your turnpike toll and fuel expenses.

How to Use Our PA Turnpike Toll Calculator

Enter your trip and vehicle details below to get estimated toll costs for both E-ZPass and Toll By Plate. The calculator shows you what you will pay on the Pennsylvania Turnpike and how much you can save with E-ZPass.

Origin (Entry): Type or select the PA Turnpike interchange where your trip begins. You can also click the location button to use your current location and find the nearest interchange.

Destination (Exit): Type or select the interchange where your trip ends. Make sure it is different from your origin.

Intermediate Stops: Click "Add Stop" if you plan to exit and re-enter the turnpike during your trip. Each stop creates a separate toll leg.

Round Trip: Turn this on if you are driving to your destination and back. The calculator will add the return toll to your total. To estimate how long the drive will take, use our Drive Time Calculator.

Departure Date & Time: Pick when you plan to travel. Toll rates change by year, so this helps the calculator use the right price schedule.

Vehicle Type: Choose the kind of vehicle you are driving — car, motorcycle, RV, or commercial truck. This sets a suggested axle count for you.

Vehicle Height Profile: Select "Low Profile" if your vehicle is under 7 feet 6 inches tall. Select "High Profile" if it is taller. Taller vehicles pay more.

Axle Count: Pick how many axles your vehicle has. Most cars and SUVs have 2 axles. More axles mean a higher toll.

Vehicle Weight: Check this box if your vehicle weighs 15,000 pounds or more. Heavy vehicles are charged a higher toll rate.

Hazardous Materials: Check this box if you are carrying placarded hazardous materials. A surcharge applies to HazMat loads.

Map Input: You can also pick your origin, stops, and destination by clicking interchange dots on the turnpike map. The map and the form fields stay in sync.

Once everything is set, click Calculate Tolls to see your E-ZPass toll, Toll By Plate toll, savings amount, a leg-by-leg breakdown, and a step-by-step explanation of how your toll was calculated.

Understanding Pennsylvania Turnpike Tolls

The Pennsylvania Turnpike (I-76 and I-276) is a major toll highway that stretches across the state of Pennsylvania. It runs about 360 miles from the Ohio border near the west to the New Jersey border near the east. Drivers must pay a toll based on how far they travel on the Turnpike. To figure out the total cost of your trip including fuel, pair this calculator with our Fuel Cost Calculator or check your vehicle's efficiency with the Gas Mileage Calculator.

Since January 2025, the PA Turnpike is fully cashless. There are no toll booths where you stop and pay. Instead, tolls are collected in two ways: E-ZPass and Toll By Plate. E-ZPass is a small device you stick on your windshield. It reads your account as you drive through and charges you automatically. If you do not have an E-ZPass, a camera takes a photo of your license plate, and a bill is mailed to you. This is called Toll By Plate, and it costs about twice as much as E-ZPass.

The amount you pay depends on a few things. The biggest factor is the distance between your entry and exit interchanges — the farther you drive, the more you pay. You can use our Mileage Calculator to track your overall trip distance. Your vehicle type also matters. Cars with two axles pay the base rate. Larger vehicles like RVs, trucks, and anything towing a trailer have more axles and pay higher tolls. If you are financing a recreational vehicle or motorcycle for your road trip, our RV Loan Calculator and Motorcycle Loan Calculator can help you understand those monthly payments. Vehicles taller than 7 feet 6 inches or heavier than 15,000 pounds are also charged more. Commercial truckers hauling freight across Pennsylvania may also want to check our Freight Class Calculator and Freight Calculator to estimate their full shipping costs alongside turnpike tolls.

The PA Turnpike Commission updates toll rates each year, usually in early January. You can use a Percent Change Calculator to see how much rates have increased from one year to the next. E-ZPass transponders from any of the 17 states in the E-ZPass network work on the PA Turnpike, so you do not need a separate one if you already have E-ZPass from another state.

If a Toll By Plate bill is not paid on time, a late fee is added. The fee is either $5.00 or 1.5% of the unpaid amount, whichever is greater. Paying with E-ZPass avoids this risk entirely and saves you money on every trip. To keep your overall travel spending in check, consider using our Budget Calculator to plan for tolls, gas costs, and other road trip expenses. If you are a business traveler claiming turnpike tolls and mileage, our Mileage Reimbursement Calculator can help you figure out what you are owed. And for Pennsylvania workers curious about their take-home pay after all the deductions, our PA Paycheck Calculator is a handy companion tool.

Frequently asked questions

What payment methods does the PA Turnpike accept?

The PA Turnpike is fully cashless since January 2025. You can pay with an E-ZPass transponder or through Toll By Plate, where a camera photographs your license plate and a bill is mailed to you. There are no cash toll booths anywhere on the turnpike.

How much more does Toll By Plate cost compared to E-ZPass?

Toll By Plate costs about twice as much as E-ZPass. For example, if your E-ZPass toll is $12.00, the same trip would cost about $24.00 with Toll By Plate. Getting an E-ZPass transponder is the easiest way to cut your PA Turnpike costs in half.

How does this calculator figure out my toll amount?

The calculator uses the distance in miles between your entry and exit interchanges, your axle count, vehicle height, weight class, and the toll rate schedule for your travel date. It multiplies a per-mile rate by your trip distance, applies your vehicle class multiplier, and shows you both the E-ZPass and Toll By Plate totals.

How many axles does my vehicle have?

Most cars, SUVs, pickups, and motorcycles have 2 axles. An axle is the rod that connects a pair of wheels. If you are towing a trailer, count the trailer's axles too. RVs usually have 3 or 4 axles. Standard tractor-trailers have 5 axles. If you are not sure, count the number of rows of wheels on your vehicle and trailer combined.

What does vehicle height profile mean?

The PA Turnpike splits vehicles into two height groups. Low profile means your vehicle is shorter than 7 feet 6 inches. High profile means it is 7 feet 6 inches or taller. Taller vehicles like box trucks and large RVs pay a higher toll. Most cars and SUVs are low profile.

Can I use an E-ZPass from another state on the PA Turnpike?

Yes. The PA Turnpike accepts E-ZPass transponders from all 17 states in the E-ZPass network. You do not need to buy a separate Pennsylvania E-ZPass if you already have one from another state.

What are intermediate stops and when should I add them?

Intermediate stops are places where you exit and then re-enter the turnpike during your trip. Each time you exit and get back on, a new toll is charged. Add a stop in the calculator if you plan to leave the turnpike for gas, food, or a visit, and then get back on to continue your trip.

Does the round trip option double my toll?

Not always exactly double. The round trip option calculates the return leg separately and adds it to your outbound toll. The total is usually very close to double because the distance is the same in both directions, but if you added intermediate stops, the return leg reverses the order of those stops.

Why does the departure date matter for my toll?

The PA Turnpike Commission updates toll rates each year, usually in early January. The departure date you pick tells the calculator which year's rate schedule to use, so your estimate matches the prices in effect on the day you plan to travel.

What happens if I do not pay my Toll By Plate bill on time?

A late fee is added to your unpaid balance. The fee is $5.00 or 1.5% of the amount owed, whichever is greater. You can use the Late Fee Estimator section at the bottom of this calculator to see what your late fee would be.

How do I use the map to pick my interchanges?

Click on any dot on the turnpike map. The first dot you click becomes your origin (marked blue). The second dot becomes your destination (marked red). Any dots you click after that become intermediate stops (marked orange). Click a selected dot again to remove it. The map and the form fields stay in sync.

Is this calculator accurate for commercial trucks?

This calculator gives a good estimate for commercial trucks based on axle count, height, weight class, and HazMat status. However, actual tolls for commercial vehicles can vary based on specific PA Turnpike Commission classifications. For exact commercial rates, check the official PA Turnpike toll schedule.

What is the minimum toll on the PA Turnpike?

The minimum toll for a 2-axle vehicle with E-ZPass is $1.80. Even if you travel a very short distance between two close interchanges, you will pay at least this amount. Toll By Plate minimum is about $3.60.

Do motorcycles pay the same toll as cars?

Yes. Motorcycles are classified as 2-axle vehicles on the PA Turnpike, so they pay the same toll rate as cars and SUVs. When you select motorcycle in this calculator, it automatically sets the axle count to 2.

Does the PA Turnpike charge different tolls at different times of day?

No. The PA Turnpike does not use peak or off-peak pricing. Your toll is the same no matter what time of day you travel. The only thing that changes rates is the yearly toll schedule update.

How do I get an E-ZPass for the PA Turnpike?

You can sign up for a PA E-ZPass online at the PA Turnpike Commission website or at select retail locations. You will receive a small transponder to mount on your windshield. There is usually a small deposit or prepaid toll balance required to open your account.

What does the HazMat checkbox do?

If you are carrying placarded hazardous materials like flammable, corrosive, or explosive cargo, check the HazMat box. This adds a 12% surcharge to your toll. It only applies to vehicles displaying official HazMat placards.

Can I use this calculator for the PA Turnpike Northeast Extension?

This calculator covers the mainline PA Turnpike (I-76/I-276) interchanges from Warrendale to Delaware Valley. The Northeast Extension (I-476) has its own set of interchanges and toll rates that are not included in this tool.

What does the 15,000 pound weight checkbox do?

If your vehicle weighs 15,000 pounds or more, checking this box applies a 15% surcharge to your toll. This covers heavy pickup trucks, loaded RVs, commercial vehicles, and anything else at or above that weight threshold.

How do I reset the calculator and start over?

Click the Calculate New Trip button. This clears all your selections — origin, destination, stops, vehicle settings, and results — and resets everything back to the default values so you can enter a new trip from scratch.
