Introduction

This free OSRS Skill Calculator helps you plan your training in Old School RuneScape. Pick any skill, enter your current level, and set a goal. The calculator shows you how many actions you need, what materials to buy, and how much gold it will cost or earn you. It pulls live prices from the Grand Exchange so your results stay accurate.

You can also look up any player name to load their stats straight from the OSRS hiscores. Compare every training method side by side, sort by cost or XP, and find the fastest or cheapest path to your target level. Whether you want to hit level 99 or just unlock a quest requirement, this tool does the math for you. If you play other games alongside OSRS, check out our KD Calculator for tracking your PvP performance or our Minecraft Stack Calculator for managing inventory in Minecraft.

How to Use Our OSRS Skill Calculator

Enter your current level, your goal level, and a training method. The calculator will show you how many actions you need, what materials to buy, how long it will take, and how much gold it will cost or earn.

Select a Skill: Click on one of the skill tiles at the top to pick the skill you want to train. The calculator starts on Smithing by default.

Look Up Player: Type your RuneScape name and click Fetch. This is optional. It pulls your current level and XP from the OSRS hiscores so you do not have to type them in by hand.

Current Level: Enter the level you are right now in the chosen skill. This must be a number from 1 to 98.

Current Experience: Enter your current XP in the skill. This field updates on its own when you change your level, but you can also type an exact number.

Target Level: Enter the level you want to reach. Pick a number from 2 to 99. You can also click a quick goal button like "99 · Max" or "85 · Elite Diary" to fill this in fast. If you want to track how close you are to any milestone, our Percent to Goal Calculator can help you visualize your progress.

Target Experience: This is the total XP needed to hit your target level. It fills in when you set a target level, but you can edit it if you have a custom XP goal.

Training Method: Choose a training method from the dropdown. Each method shows its level requirement and XP per action. The summary section will update to match the method you pick.

Estimated Actions Per Hour: Pick a pace that fits how you play. Choose AFK if you look away a lot, or Tick-perfect if you click with no delays. This changes the time estimate. You can use our Time Duration Calculator to plan training sessions around your real-life schedule.

Hide Methods I Don't Meet Requirements For: Check this box to remove any method from the table that needs a higher level than your current level.

Show Methods With Inactive or Missing Prices: Check this box to see methods that have no live Grand Exchange price data. These methods will not show accurate cost numbers.

Calculate / Reset: Click Calculate to update all results. Click Reset to clear everything and start over from scratch.

Old School RuneScape Skill Training Guide

Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is a popular online game where your character grows stronger by training skills. There are over 20 skills in the game, and each one levels up from 1 to 99. You gain experience points (XP) every time you do an action tied to a skill, like mining a rock or cooking a fish. The higher your level, the more XP you need to reach the next one. Going from level 1 to 99 takes exactly 13,034,431 XP.

Each skill unlocks new abilities and content as you level up. For example, a higher Smithing level lets you work with stronger metals, and a higher Fishing level lets you catch better fish. Some skills are free to train, while others cost gold pieces (GP) because you need to buy materials from the Grand Exchange, which is the in-game marketplace where players buy and sell items.

How XP and Leveling Work in OSRS

XP in OSRS does not scale evenly. Early levels are fast, but later levels take much longer. Level 92 is the halfway point to 99 in terms of total XP. You can use a Percentage Calculator to see exactly what fraction of the grind you have completed at any given level. This means the last few levels take as much effort as all the levels before them combined. That is why picking the right training method matters so much. Some methods are fast but expensive. Others are slow but make you money.

Choosing a Training Method

Every skill has multiple ways to train it. The best method for you depends on your budget and how much time you want to spend. For instance, in Smithing you can smelt gold bars for fast XP at a cost, or make cannonballs slowly but for profit. In Prayer, using dragon bones on a gilded altar is fast but costs millions of GP. Knowing the cost per XP helps you plan ahead and save money. If you want to evaluate whether an expensive training method is worth the investment, our ROI Calculator can help you think about returns on your GP spending, and our Margin Calculator is useful for checking margins on items you flip on the Grand Exchange.

The Grand Exchange and Item Prices

Most training methods in OSRS require materials you buy on the Grand Exchange. Prices change every day based on supply and demand. A method that was cheap last week might be expensive today. Live price data helps you find the best deals and avoid overpaying. Some methods even turn a profit when the items you create sell for more than the materials cost. You can use our EV Calculator to evaluate the expected value of activities like boss drops or clue scrolls where outcomes are based on probability.

Planning your skill training ahead of time saves both GP and hours of gameplay. Whether you want to max every skill or just hit a level requirement for a quest or diary, knowing the numbers puts you in control. If you also track combat stats for PvP or bossing, our Win Rate Calculator can help you monitor your success rate over time. And if you play other games, explore our calculators for Pokémon damage, Minecraft enchantments, or FPS performance.

Frequently asked questions

What skills does this OSRS calculator support?

This calculator supports 18 skills: Agility, Construction, Cooking, Crafting, Farming, Firemaking, Fishing, Fletching, Herblore, Hunter, Magic, Mining, Prayer, Runecrafting, Sailing, Smithing, Thieving, and Woodcutting. Click any skill tile at the top to switch between them.

Where do the Grand Exchange prices come from?

The calculator pulls live prices from the official RuneScape Wiki price API. If the API is down or a price is missing, it falls back to built-in estimates. A status bar below the inputs tells you if prices are live or using fallback data.

Why does the calculator say level 92 is halfway to 99?

XP in OSRS grows faster at higher levels. The total XP for level 99 is 13,034,431. Level 92 needs 6,517,253 XP, which is almost exactly half. So the last 7 levels take as much XP as levels 1 through 92 combined.

What does the GP/XP column mean?

GP/XP shows how much gold you spend or earn for each point of experience. A negative number means you lose gold per XP. A positive number means you gain gold per XP. Use this to compare which methods are cheapest or most profitable.

Why is my player lookup not working?

The lookup uses the OSRS hiscores. It can fail if your name is misspelled, the player is unranked in that skill, or the hiscores are down. If it does not work, just type your level and XP by hand.

What does the actions per hour setting change?

It changes the time estimate in the summary. If you play while watching TV, pick AFK (~800/hr). If you click fast with no breaks, pick Tick-perfect (~2,500/hr). It does not change XP or cost numbers, only the estimated time.

Can I set a custom XP target instead of a level?

Yes. Just type any number into the Target Experience box. The Target Level will update to match. This is useful if you want to hit an exact XP milestone instead of a full level.

Why are some rows grayed out in the table?

Grayed-out rows are methods that need a higher level than your current level. You can still see their costs and XP. Check the Hide methods I don't meet requirements for box to remove them from the table.

What does the Net Profit/Loss column show?

It shows the total gold you gain or lose if you use that method all the way to your target. Green means profit. Red means loss. It is calculated by subtracting material costs from the sale price of items you create, multiplied by the number of actions.

Does the calculator account for failed actions like burning food?

No. The calculator assumes every action succeeds. In the real game, you may burn food or fail to smelt a bar at low levels. You may need slightly more materials than the calculator shows until you reach the level where failures stop.

Why do some methods show a Price unavailable badge?

This means the Grand Exchange API did not return a price for one or more items in that method. The cost and profit numbers for that row may be wrong. Check the Show methods with inactive or missing prices box to see these rows.

Is Sailing data accurate?

No. Sailing is a newer OSRS skill, and the XP values shown are placeholder estimates. They will be updated as official data becomes available.

How do I find the cheapest way to 99?

Set your target to 99, then click the Total Cost column header in the table to sort by cost. The method at the top with the lowest total cost (or highest profit) is the cheapest path. Green numbers mean you make money.

Does this calculator work on mobile?

Yes. The layout adjusts to smaller screens. Skill tiles, the summary cards, and the table all resize to fit phones and tablets. You can scroll the table sideways if needed.

How often do the live prices update?

Prices load fresh from the API each time you open the page or select a skill. The timestamp below the input section shows when prices were last fetched. For the most current data, refresh the page.
