Introduction

Your combat level in Old School RuneScape (OSRS) is one number that sums up how strong your character is. It is based on your Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer levels. Every player you meet in PvP or PvE can see this number, and it decides who you can fight in the Wilderness and PvP worlds.

This free OSRS combat level calculator lets you find your exact combat level in seconds. Type in your skill levels or look up any player straight from the official Hiscores. The tool shows your combat style, your progress toward the next level, and the fastest way to level up. It also tells you how many levels you can train in one skill without raising your combat level — a must-know for any pure or PvP-focused account build. If you need to plan how much XP you need for a specific level, pair this with our OSRS Skill Calculator.

Whether you are building a 1-Defence pure, a zerker, or a maxed main, use this calculator to plan every level before you spend time and gold training.

How to Use Our OSRS Combat Calculator

Enter your Old School RuneScape combat skill levels below to find your exact combat level, your dominant combat style, and how to plan your next levels.

OSRS Username: Type your in-game name and click "Lookup Player" to pull your stats from the Hiscores. This fills in all your levels for you. You can skip this and type your levels by hand.

Attack: Enter your Attack level from 1 to 99. This skill helps set your melee combat score.

Strength: Enter your Strength level from 1 to 99. Along with Attack, this decides your melee combat power.

Defence: Enter your Defence level from 1 to 99. This adds to your base combat level.

Hitpoints: Enter your Hitpoints level from 10 to 99. This also adds to your base combat level. If you check "Estimate Hitpoints from other skills," the calculator will guess this number for you.

Ranged: Enter your Ranged level from 1 to 99. If Ranged is your highest combat skill, your style will show as Ranged.

Magic: Enter your Magic level from 1 to 99. If Magic is your highest combat skill, your style will show as Magic.

Prayer: Enter your Prayer level from 1 to 99. Every two Prayer levels add one point to your base combat level.

Estimate Hitpoints: Check this box if you do not know your Hitpoints level. The tool will estimate it based on your other combat skills.

Auto-Calculate: When this box is checked, your combat level updates right away each time you change a skill. Turn it off if you want to enter all your levels first, then click "Calculate."

Optimize Combat Level: Click this button after you calculate to find out which single skill needs the fewest levels to reach your next combat level.

What Is Combat Level in Old School RuneScape?

In Old School RuneScape (OSRS), your combat level is a number between 3 and 126. It shows how strong your character is in a fight. The game calculates it using seven skills: Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer. To figure out the XP needed for each of those skills, you can use our OSRS Skill Calculator.

How Combat Level Is Calculated

The formula has two parts. First, there is a base value that comes from your Defence, Hitpoints, and Prayer levels. Every player uses this same base. Second, the game picks the highest value out of three combat styles: Melee (Attack + Strength), Ranged, or Magic. Whichever style gives the biggest number is the one the game uses. This means only your strongest combat style affects your final level.

Why Combat Level Matters for PvP

In PvP, your combat level decides who you can fight. In the Wilderness, you can only attack players within a certain range of your level. That range grows the deeper you go. This is why many players build accounts with specific skill levels. A well-planned account can have high damage output while keeping a low combat level. This gives an edge against opponents who trained their skills without a plan. If you want to track your performance over time, a KD Calculator is a handy way to measure your kill-to-death ratio across PvP sessions, and a Win Rate Calculator can help you see how often you come out on top.

What Are Combat Pure Accounts?

A pure is an account built to stay at a low combat level while hitting hard. For example, a player might train Strength and Ranged to 99 but keep Defence at 1. This keeps the combat level low while dealing heavy damage. Other common builds include zerkers (45 Defence), med-levels (70 Defence), and piety pures (70 Defence with high Prayer). Each build is a trade-off between power and combat level. Damage calculation is critical for these builds — similar to how players use a Pokémon Damage Calculator to optimize output, OSRS PvP players carefully plan their max hits against their combat bracket.

Planning Your Levels

Before you train a skill, it helps to know if it will raise your combat level. Some skills raise it faster than others. For instance, one Strength level can raise combat more than one Prayer level. Use the calculator above to test different level combinations and find the best path for your account build. To plan training time and XP goals for each skill, use our OSRS Skill Calculator alongside this tool. And if you are running OSRS alongside other games, check out our FPS Calculator to make sure your setup handles everything smoothly.

Frequently asked questions

What is the combat level formula in OSRS?

The formula is: Base + Best Style. The base equals 0.25 × (Defence + Hitpoints + floor(Prayer ÷ 2)). The game then picks the highest of three styles: Melee is 0.325 × (Attack + Strength), Ranged is 0.325 × floor(Ranged × 1.5), and Magic is 0.325 × floor(Magic × 1.5). The base plus the best style gives your combat level.

What is the lowest combat level you can have in OSRS?

The lowest combat level is 3. Every new account starts at combat level 3 because you begin with level 1 in Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, Magic, and Prayer, plus level 10 in Hitpoints.

What is the highest combat level in OSRS?

The highest combat level is 126. You reach it by getting level 99 in Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Prayer, and either Ranged or Magic (or both).

Does training Magic or Ranged always raise my combat level?

No. Magic and Ranged only raise your combat level if they become your highest combat style. If your melee score (from Attack and Strength) is already higher, training Ranged or Magic will not change your combat level until it passes your melee score.

Does Prayer raise combat level?

Yes, but slowly. Every 2 Prayer levels add the same amount as 1 Defence or 1 Hitpoints level. So Prayer raises your combat level at half the rate of Defence or Hitpoints.

How do I train skills without raising my combat level?

Use the "Levels available before your next combat level" section of the calculator. It tells you how many levels you can gain in each skill group before your combat level goes up. This is very helpful for pure accounts.

What does the Optimize button do?

The Optimize button checks every single skill and tells you which one needs the fewest levels to reach your next combat level. It saves you time by showing the fastest path forward.

What does the Estimate Hitpoints checkbox do?

It guesses your Hitpoints level based on the XP you would have earned from training your other combat skills. This is useful if you do not know your exact Hitpoints level. You can also exclude Ranged or Magic from the estimate in the Advanced Options.

Why does the player lookup fail sometimes?

The lookup uses the official OSRS Hiscores API. It can fail if the player has not logged in recently, if the username is wrong, or if the Hiscores server is down. Some browsers also block the request. If it fails, just type your levels in by hand.

What combat style does the calculator show?

It shows which style gives you the highest combat score: Melee, Ranged, or Magic. If two styles are tied, it shows both. This is the style the game uses to set your combat level.

Can I use this calculator for a 1 Defence pure build?

Yes. Set Defence to 1 and enter your other levels. The calculator will show your combat level, and the planning sections will tell you exactly how many levels you can train in each skill before your combat level goes up.

Does this calculator work for ironman accounts?

Yes. The combat formula is the same for all account types, including ironman, hardcore ironman, and group ironman. The player lookup also works for ironman accounts that appear on the Hiscores.

What is the progress bar showing?

The progress bar shows how close you are to the next whole combat level. For example, if your precise level is 85.60, the bar shows 60%. Once it reaches 100%, your combat level rounds up to the next number.

Is the combat level shown here the same as in-game?

Yes. This calculator uses the exact same formula that Old School RuneScape uses. The combat level it shows will match what you see in-game, as long as you enter the correct skill levels.

Why does Strength raise combat faster than Defence?

Strength is part of the melee style score, which uses a multiplier of 0.325. Defence is part of the base score, which uses a multiplier of 0.25. Since 0.325 is bigger than 0.25, each Strength level adds more to your combat level than each Defence level.
