Introduction

This OSRS Prayer calculator helps you figure out the fastest and cheapest way to train Prayer in Old School RuneScape. Just enter your current level and your goal, pick an altar, and the tool does the rest. It shows you how many bones, ashes, or ensouled heads you need, how much gold it will cost, and how long it will take. If you need to plan XP for other skills, try our OSRS Skill Calculator.

You can compare every training method side by side in one table. Each row shows the GP per XP, total cost, and estimated time so you can find the best option for your budget. The calculator supports Gilded Altar, Chaos Altar, Ectofuntus, Sacred Bone Burner, Demonic Offering, Sinister Offering, and Blessed Bone Shards. It also factors in Zealot's Robes bone-saving, unnoting fees, and League multipliers.

Import your stats straight from the OSRS Hiscores or type in your XP by hand. Edit any item price in the table to match live Grand Exchange values. Whether you want to rush 43 Prayer for Protect from Melee or grind all the way to 99, this calculator will show you exactly what you need.

How to Use Our OSRS Prayer Calculator

Enter your current Prayer level and your goal, and this calculator will show you every training method, how many items you need, the total GP cost, and the fastest path to your target level.

OSRS Username — Type your RuneScape username and click "Import from Hiscores" to pull your current Prayer XP automatically. This step is optional. You can type your stats in by hand instead.

Current Prayer — Pick "Level" or "Experience" and enter your current Prayer stat. If you enter raw XP, the results will be more exact.

Goal Prayer — Pick "Level" or "Experience" and enter the Prayer level or XP you want to reach.

Quick Goal Presets — Click a preset button like Protect Melee (43), Piety (70), Rigour (77), or Max (99) to set your goal fast.

Altar / XP Bonus Location — Choose where you plan to train. Each altar gives a different XP multiplier. Gilded Altar with both burners lit gives 3.5× XP. Chaos Altar also gives 3.5× but saves 50% of bones at the risk of PvP.

Unnoting Service — If you use an NPC like Phials to unnote your bones, select them here. The fee per item is added to your total cost.

League Mode — Turn this on if you play on a League world. Then enter your League XP multiplier (5× to 32×).

Libation Bowl Wine — This option appears when Blessed Bone Shards are selected. Pick Blessed Wine (5 XP per shard) or Sunfire Wine (6 XP per shard).

Zealot's Robes — Check each piece of Zealot's gear you own. Each piece gives a 1.25% chance to save a bone, up to 5% with the full set.

Calculate / Reset — Click "Calculate" to update all results. Click "Reset" to clear everything back to default.

Category Filter — Use the dropdown above the table to show only one type of method, such as Regular Bones, Ashes, or Ensouled Heads.

Inaccessible Methods — Choose to show, hide, or grey out methods that need a higher Prayer level than you currently have.

Rank Badge By — Switch between ranking methods by cost efficiency (cheapest GP per XP) or speed (most XP per hour).

GE Price — Each row in the table has an editable price field. Change any price to match the live Grand Exchange value and the costs will update right away. Click "Reset Prices to Defaults" to undo all price changes.

Select a Method — Click the radio button on any row in the table to load that method's full breakdown into the Summary panel above.

OSRS Prayer Training Guide

Prayer is a skill in Old School RuneScape (OSRS) that lets your character use powerful prayers during combat. These prayers can boost your attack, strength, and defence. They can also protect you from melee, ranged, and magic damage. Prayer is one of the most useful skills in the game because it helps you survive tough fights and boss encounters. Use our OSRS Combat Calculator to see how your Prayer level affects your overall combat level.

How to Train Prayer

The main way to level Prayer is by offering bones or ashes. You can bury bones by hand, but this is slow and gives the least XP. A much faster option is to use bones on a gilded altar inside a player-owned house. A gilded altar with both burners lit gives 3.5 times the normal XP. The Chaos Altar in the Wilderness also gives 3.5 times XP and has a 50% chance to save your bone, but other players can attack you there. The Ectofuntus gives the highest multiplier at 4 times XP, but it takes more steps per bone. For planning XP across all your skills, our OSRS Skill Calculator can help you map out your overall training goals.

Common Bone and Offering Types

Not all bones give the same XP. Regular bones give only 4.5 XP each, while dragon bones give 72 XP and superior dragon bones give 150 XP. Ensouled heads are another option. You cast a reanimation spell on them, kill the creature that appears, and earn Prayer XP. Demonic offering and sinister offering are spells that let you sacrifice ashes or bones for XP without an altar, but they require high Prayer levels to use.

Key Prayer Unlocks

Most players train Prayer to reach specific milestones. Level 43 unlocks Protect from Melee, which blocks all melee damage from monsters. Level 70 unlocks Piety, a strong prayer that boosts attack, strength, and defence at the same time. Level 74 unlocks Augury for magic users, and level 77 unlocks Rigour for ranged users. These high-level prayers make a big difference in bossing and PvP. If you are grinding bosses for rare drops, our OSRS Dry Calculator can tell you how unlucky your dry streak really is.

Saving Money on Prayer

Prayer is one of the most expensive skills to train. Choosing the right method matters. Cheaper bones like big bones cost less but give far less XP, so training takes longer. Dragon bones and hydra bones offer a good balance between cost and speed. The Chaos Altar is the cheapest way to use bones because of its bone-saving effect, but you risk losing items to player killers. If you want to track your PvP performance at the Chaos Altar, a KD Calculator can help you monitor your kill-death ratio. Wearing Zealot's robes adds a small bone-save chance at any altar. Ensouled heads are often cheaper per XP than bones on a gilded altar, making them a popular budget option.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best altar to use for Prayer training in OSRS?

It depends on your budget and risk tolerance. The Gilded Altar with both burners lit gives 3.5× XP and is safe. The Chaos Altar also gives 3.5× XP but saves 50% of your bones on average, making it the cheapest option. However, it is in the Wilderness, so other players can attack you. The Ectofuntus gives 4× XP but takes more time per bone. Use this calculator to compare costs for each altar with your chosen bone type.

Why does the calculator say I need fewer bones at the Chaos Altar?

The Chaos Altar has a 50% chance to not consume your bone when you offer it. This means on average you only use half as many bones. The calculator factors this bone-save chance into the items needed and total cost. If you also wear Zealot's Robes, the save chance stacks even higher.

How do I edit item prices in the table?

Each row in the method table has a GE Price input box. Click on it and type the current Grand Exchange price for that item. The calculator will update the total cost, GP per XP, and all other values right away. Click Reset Prices to Defaults to undo all your changes.

What are Zealot's Robes and how do they help?

Zealot's Robes are a four-piece outfit that gives a bone-save chance. Each piece adds a 1.25% chance to not consume a bone when you offer it. The full set gives 5%. Check each piece you own in the calculator and it will reduce the number of bones you need and lower your total cost.

What is the cheapest way to train Prayer to 43?

The cheapest way is usually big bones at the Chaos Altar. Big bones are cheap, and the Chaos Altar's 50% bone-save cuts the cost in half. If you want to avoid the Wilderness, ensouled heads or big bones at a Gilded Altar are good budget options. Use this calculator to compare exact costs based on current prices.

Why is the Hiscores import not working?

The OSRS Hiscores import can fail for a few reasons. Your browser may block the request due to CORS restrictions. The Hiscores server may be down or slow. Your username may be typed wrong. If it does not work, just enter your Prayer level or XP by hand instead.

What does GP per XP mean?

GP per XP tells you how many gold pieces you spend for each point of Prayer experience. A lower number means the method is cheaper. For example, if a method shows 5.00 GP/XP and you need 100,000 XP, the total cost is about 500,000 GP. Use this number to compare methods by cost.

How are ensouled heads different from bones?

Ensouled heads use the Arceuus spellbook. You cast a reanimation spell on the head, a creature appears, and you kill it for Prayer XP. They do not benefit from altar multipliers. They have their own rune costs. They are often cheaper per XP than dragon bones on a Gilded Altar, making them a popular budget choice.

What is Demonic Offering and Sinister Offering?

Demonic Offering is a spell that sacrifices 3 ashes for Prayer XP. It requires level 84 Prayer. Sinister Offering sacrifices 3 bones and requires level 92 Prayer. Both spells work without an altar and have a rune cost. The calculator includes the rune cost in the total GP shown.

Does this calculator work for League worlds?

Yes. Turn on the League Mode toggle and enter your League XP multiplier (5× to 32×). The calculator will multiply all XP by that amount, which lowers the number of items you need and changes the total cost and time.

What are Blessed Bone Shards and the Libation Bowl?

Blessed Bone Shards are a training method where you use shards with a Libation Bowl. You pick either Blessed Wine (5 XP per shard) or Sunfire Wine (6 XP per shard). This option appears in the calculator when you select or filter for Blessed Bone Shards. The Libation Bowl also drains your Prayer points while training.

What does the unnoting fee do to my total cost?

If you bring noted bones to an NPC like Phials, he charges 5 GP per item to unnote them. This fee is added to the cost of every bone or ash you use. The calculator adds this to your total cost and shows it in the unnote fee column.

How accurate are the estimated times?

The estimated times are based on average actions per hour for each method. Real times can vary based on your click speed, bank distance, lag, and interruptions. Treat the times as a rough guide, not an exact measurement.

What does the lock icon next to a method mean?

The lock icon means your current Prayer level is too low to use that method. The Lv Req column shows the minimum level needed. You can choose to show, hide, or grey out these locked methods using the Inaccessible Methods toggle above the table.

How do I pick the best method for my budget?

Sort the table by GP / XP to find the cheapest method. Sort by Est. Time to find the fastest. You can also check the Rank column, which badges each method by cost efficiency or speed. The Summary panel at the top auto-selects the cheapest accessible method for you.

Can I use this calculator for an Ironman account?

You can use it to see XP and item counts, but the GP costs assume you buy items from the Grand Exchange. Ironmen cannot use the GE, so you would need to gather bones or ashes yourself. The item counts, XP per item, and time estimates are still useful for planning.
