Step-by-Step Solution

Introduction

Your combat level in RuneScape is a single number that shows how strong your character is in a fight. It is based on your combat skill levels, like Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Prayer, Ranged, and Magic. This RuneScape combat level calculator does the math for you in seconds. Just type in your skill levels or look up any player by name, and the tool will show your exact combat level, which combat style is your strongest, and how close you are to the next level.

This calculator works for both Old School RuneScape (OSRS) and RuneScape 3 (RS3). Each game uses a different formula, and the tool handles both. In OSRS, seven skills determine your combat level, with a max of 126. In RS3, nine skills are used — including Summoning and Necromancy — with a max of 152. Switch between modes with one click.

You can also fetch stats straight from the official Hiscores, estimate your Hitpoints level from your other skills, and see a full step-by-step breakdown of how your combat level is calculated. Whether you want to plan a pure build or just check your progress, this tool gives you clear answers fast.

How to Use Our RuneScape Combat Level Calculator

Enter your skill levels below to find your combat level, see which combat style is strongest, and learn how many levels you need to reach the next combat level.

Game Mode: Pick either OSRS or RS3. OSRS uses 7 combat skills. RS3 uses 9 skills, which adds Summoning and Necromancy. Switching modes will reset all skills to their defaults.

Player Lookup: Type your RuneScape display name and click "Fetch Stats" to pull your skill levels straight from the Hiscores. This fills in all the skill fields for you. If a skill is unranked, it stays at the default level.

Auto-Calculate: This is on by default. It updates your combat level every time you change a skill. Turn it off if you want to enter all your levels first and then click "Calculate" when you are ready.

Estimate Hitpoints (OSRS only): Check this box to let the tool guess your Hitpoints level based on your other combat skills. This is helpful if you are planning a build and want to see what your HP would be. You can also open Advanced Options to exclude Magic or Ranged from the estimate if you train those skills without gaining Hitpoints XP.

Attack: Enter your Attack level. This skill affects your melee combat score.

Strength: Enter your Strength level. This skill affects your melee combat score.

Defence: Enter your Defence level. This skill is part of the base calculation for all combat styles.

Hitpoints / Constitution: Enter your Hitpoints level (OSRS) or Constitution level (RS3). The minimum is 10. This skill is part of the base calculation.

Prayer: Enter your Prayer level. Half of this level is added to your base combat score.

Ranged: Enter your Ranged level. This skill sets your ranged combat score.

Magic: Enter your Magic level. This skill sets your magic combat score.

Summoning (RS3 only): Enter your Summoning level. Half of this level is added to your RS3 combat score.

Necromancy (RS3 only): Enter your Necromancy level. This skill sets your necromancy combat score in RS3.

What Is Combat Level in RuneScape?

In RuneScape, your combat level is a number that shows how strong your character is in a fight. It is based on your combat skill levels, like Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Prayer, Ranged, and Magic. The higher your combat skills, the higher your combat level will be.

Your combat level matters a lot in the game. Other players see it when they right-click your character. In PvP areas like the Wilderness, it decides who can attack you. Monsters also have combat levels, so you can compare yours to theirs to know how tough a fight might be.

How Combat Level Is Calculated

The game uses a math formula to turn your skill levels into one combat level number. It first adds up a base score from your Defence, Hitpoints, and Prayer. Then it looks at three combat styles — Melee (Attack + Strength), Ranged, and Magic — and picks whichever style gives the highest score. The style with the highest score is called your dominant combat style. Your base score plus your best style score gives you your final combat level.

In Old School RuneScape (OSRS), the lowest combat level you can have is 3, and the highest is 126. In RuneScape 3 (RS3), the formula is a bit different. RS3 adds two extra skills — Summoning and Necromancy — and the max combat level is 152.

Why Combat Level Matters

Knowing your combat level helps you plan your training. For example, some players want to keep a low combat level while making one skill very high. This is called building a pure account. Other players want to reach the max combat level as fast as they can. Either way, understanding which skills raise your combat level — and by how much — helps you make smart choices about where to spend your time training.

Frequently asked questions

What is the max combat level in OSRS?

The max combat level in Old School RuneScape is 126. You reach it by getting 99 in Attack, Strength, Defence, Hitpoints, Prayer, Ranged, and Magic.

What is the max combat level in RS3?

The max combat level in RuneScape 3 is 152. RS3 uses nine combat skills instead of seven, adding Summoning and Necromancy to the formula.

Why is my combat level 3 when all my skills are level 1?

Every new account starts with 10 Hitpoints. The combat formula uses that starting Hitpoints level along with your other level-1 skills, which gives a base combat level of 3.

Which skills raise combat level the fastest?

Your dominant combat style raises your level the fastest. If you are melee-based, Attack and Strength have the biggest impact. If you focus on Ranged or Magic, those skills push your level up the most. Defence and Hitpoints also raise combat level but at a slower rate since they apply to all styles equally.

What is a dominant combat style?

Your dominant combat style is whichever style — Melee, Ranged, Magic, or Necromancy (RS3 only) — gives the highest offensive score in the combat formula. The calculator highlights your dominant style and marks it on the chart.

Does Prayer affect my combat level?

Yes. Half of your Prayer level is added to your base combat score. Every 2 Prayer levels you gain will add to your combat level. Raising Prayer from 1 to 99 adds about 12 combat levels.

What is a pure account and how does this calculator help?

A pure is an account that keeps certain skills low — usually Defence — to stay at a low combat level while having high offensive stats. This calculator lets you test different skill combinations so you can plan the exact build you want before you start training.

How does the Hitpoints estimate feature work?

When you turn on "Estimate Hitpoints" in OSRS mode, the tool calculates how much Hitpoints XP you would earn from training Attack, Strength, Defence, Ranged, and Magic through combat. It then converts that XP into a Hitpoints level. You can exclude Magic or Ranged if you train them without gaining Hitpoints XP, like through High Alchemy or the Dwarf Cannon.

Why can't I find my player name in the Hiscores lookup?

The lookup only works if your account is ranked on the official RuneScape Hiscores. Free-to-play accounts or very new accounts may not appear. The Hiscores service can also go down for maintenance. If the lookup fails, you can type your skill levels in by hand.

Does Defence raise combat level for all styles?

Yes. Defence is part of the base score in the combat formula. It raises your combat level no matter which combat style is dominant. This is why pure accounts often keep Defence at level 1.

How does Summoning affect combat level in RS3?

In RS3, half of your Summoning level is added to your combat score, similar to how Prayer works. Summoning does not exist in the OSRS combat formula.

Can Ranged and Magic be dominant at the same time?

If your Ranged and Magic levels are equal, they produce the same offensive score. The calculator will show one as dominant, but in practice they tie. Your combat level stays the same either way.

How do I lower my combat level?

You cannot lower your combat level in RuneScape. Skill levels are permanent, so your combat level can only go up. The only way to have a lower combat level is to create a new account and train carefully.

What does the progress bar show?

The progress bar shows how close you are to the next combat level. It also lists every combat skill and tells you how many levels you need in each one to reach that next level.

Is the combat formula different for free-to-play and members?

No. The combat formula is the same for free-to-play and members in both OSRS and RS3. The only difference is that members have access to more training methods and higher-level content.
