The Stainless Steel Weight Calculator tells you how much a piece of stainless steel weighs. You pick a grade, pick a shape, type in the size, and get the weight right away.

It works with round bar, square bar, flat bar, hex bar, plate and sheet, round pipe, square tube, rectangle tube, rings, and coils. How to use our Stainless Steel Weight Calculator

Stainless Steel Weight: What It Means and Why It Matters

Stainless steel weight is how much a piece of steel weighs based on its size, its shape, and the grade of metal it is made from. Metal is sold and shipped by weight, so knowing the weight of a bar, plate, pipe, or coil helps you price a job, plan a shipment with a freight calculator, and stay under load limits for cranes, trucks, and racks.

How Steel Weight Is Found

Every weight starts with two numbers: volume and density.

  • Volume is how much space the metal fills. It comes from the shape and the measurements you take, like diameter, width, thickness, and length. A general Volume Calculator or the Cylinder Volume Calculator covers the same geometry for non-metal parts.
  • Density is how heavy the metal is for each bit of space. Stainless steel density is about 0.28 to 0.29 pounds per cubic inch, or about 7.75 to 8.03 grams per cubic centimeter. You can compare alloys with the Specific Gravity Calculator.

Multiply them together and you get the weight:

Weight = Volume × Density

For hollow parts like pipe and tube, you find the volume of the outside shape and take away the empty space inside. What is left is the metal, and that is what you weigh. The Pipe Volume Calculator shows the same subtraction for the bore itself.

Grades Change the Weight

Stainless steel comes in many grades, and each one has a slightly different mix of metals. That changes the density a little. Austenitic grades like 304, 304L, 316, and 316L are the heaviest, near 0.289–0.290 lb/in³. Martensitic grades like 410, 416, and 420 are lighter, near 0.280 lb/in³. Duplex 2205 and 2507 and the PH grades such as 17-4 PH and 15-5 PH sit in between. Two bars the same size can differ by about 3 to 4 percent in weight just from the grade, which adds up fast on a big order. Common Shapes and Their Formulas

  • Square bar: S² × L

  • Square and rectangle tube: outside area minus inside area, times length

Tips for Getting It Right

Keep your units straight. Inches, feet, millimeters, and meters all work, but they must be changed to one unit before you do the math. Measure wall thickness as the metal wall only, not the hole. Wall thickness can never be more than half the outside size, and an inner diameter must always be smaller than the outer diameter.

Remember that these numbers are theoretical weights. Real mill product has size tolerances, so the true scale weight may be a bit higher or lower, usually within a few percent. Cutting, drilling, welding, and mill scale also shift the final number. For shipping quotes and structure loads, add a small safety margin instead of using the exact figure. Frequently asked questions

Is the weight I get exact?

No. It is a theoretical weight. It uses perfect sizes and a book density. Real bars and plates have mill tolerances, so the scale weight is usually within a few percent. Add a small margin for shipping or lifting.

Which stainless grade is the heaviest?

The 316, 316L, 317 and 317L grades are heaviest at about 0.290 lb/in³. The 410, 416 and 420 grades are lightest at about 0.280 lb/in³. The gap is roughly 3.5% for the same size part.

Do 304 and 304L weigh the same?

Yes. The "L" only means low carbon. It does not change the density, so a 304 and a 304L bar of the same size weigh the same. The same is true for 316 and 316L.

Why does the calculator say my wall thickness is too big?

A pipe or tube wall is counted twice, once on each side. So the wall can never be half the outside size or more. If it were, there would be no hole left. Check that you typed the wall, not the inside radius.

How do I measure a hex bar?

Measure flat to flat, straight across the bar. That is the across-flats (AF) size. Do not measure corner to corner, since that number is larger and will give you too much weight.

What if I know the pipe ID instead of the wall thickness?

Find the wall with simple math: Wall = (OD − ID) ÷ 2. Type that answer in the Wall Thickness box. Or pick the Ring shape and use OD, ID and length instead.

Can I mix inches and millimeters in the same part?

Yes. Each size box has its own unit menu. You can enter a wall in mm and a length in feet. A yellow notice appears and the tool converts everything to inches before it does the math.

What is the difference between a short ton and a metric ton?

A US short ton is 2,000 pounds. A metric ton (tonne) is 1,000 kilograms, or about 2,204.6 pounds. A metric ton is about 10% heavier.

Should I pick plate or sheet?

Use the same option for both. The math is identical: length × width × thickness. Sheet is just thinner than plate, usually under 3/16 inch (about 4.76 mm).

How do I turn a gauge number into a thickness?

Look up the decimal thickness for your gauge chart, then type it in. For example, 16 gauge stainless is about 0.0595 in and 11 gauge is about 0.1196 in. Gauge numbers get thinner as the number gets bigger.

Does the calculator take off holes, cuts or bevels?

No. It weighs the full solid shape. If your part has big holes or cutouts, work out the weight of the removed metal on its own and subtract it.

What does the strip length result for a coil mean?

It is how long the strip would be if you rolled the whole coil out flat. It comes from the metal volume divided by the coil width times the strip thickness.

Why is weight per foot useful?

It lets you price any length fast. Once you know a size weighs, say, 10.7 lbs per foot, just multiply by the feet you need. No need to redo the whole calculation.

What does the bar chart show?

It shows what your exact part would weigh in all 18 stainless grades. Your chosen grade is the dark bar. It is a fast way to see how much weight you save or add by switching grades.

Should I use Standard or High precision?

Use Standard (2 decimals) for most orders and quotes. Use High (4 decimals) for small parts, thin foil or when you need weight per inch to be very exact.

Can I use this for carbon steel or aluminum?

No. The grade list only holds stainless densities. Carbon steel and aluminum weigh different amounts, so use a steel, metal or aluminum weight tool instead.

Does a polished or brushed finish change the weight?

Only a tiny bit. Polishing removes a very small amount of metal. It is far below the mill tolerance, so you can ignore it for quotes and shipping.

How do I weigh a stack of different sizes?

Run each size on its own with its own piece count, write down each total, then add them up. The Number of Pieces box only works for parts that are all the same size.
