Steel Plate Weight: What It Means
Steel plate weight is how much a flat piece of metal weighs. You find it from three things: the plate's thickness, its width, and its length. Multiply those three to get the volume. Then multiply the volume by the metal's density (how heavy the metal is for its size). That gives you the weight.
The Formula
Weight = Thickness × Width × Length × Density
All the sizes must use the same unit. If you work in inches, use a density in pounds per cubic inch. If you work in millimeters or centimeters, use grams per cubic centimeter. Aluminum is about one third the weight of steel for the same size plate. Stainless steel is a little heavier than mild steel. Steel is sold by weight, so weight sets the price. Weight also tells you what truck, crane, or forklift you need, and if the floor or frame under the plate can hold it. Standard Plate Thickness
Mills roll plate in set thicknesses, often in fractions of an inch like 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 3/4", 1", and up. In metric, those match sizes like 6.35 mm, 9.53 mm, 12.7 mm, and 19.05 mm. Weight Per Area
Steel plate weight is often listed as pounds per square foot (lb/ft²) or kilograms per square meter (kg/m²). For mild steel, a plate that is 1 inch thick weighs about 40.8 lb/ft². A simple shortcut: multiply the thickness in inches by 40.8 to get lb/ft². For metric, multiply the thickness in millimeters by 7.85 to get kg/m². Weight Units You Will See
Small plates are given in pounds or kilograms. Big orders use tons. A metric ton is 1,000 kg (about 2,205 lb). A short ton, used in the United States, is 2,000 lb.
